ALMA - Tom Leher
The loveliest girl in Vienna
Was Alma, the smartest as well.
Once you picked her up on your antenna,
You'd never be free of her spell.
Her lovers were many and varied
From the day she began her - beguine.
There were three famous ones whom she married,
And God knows how many between.
Alma, tell us,
All modern women are jealous,
Which of your magical wands
Got you euros and dollars and yens?

ACC Meeting in Tokyo; Formation of Expanded ACC A resolution was signed by Dr. Cesarsky, Chair of the ACC, Dr. Eisenstein, Vice Chair of the ACC and Dr. Kaifu, Director-General of NAO-J, concerning the Partnership for planning the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). One aspect of this resolution was that a Japanese Delegation will, with immediate effect, participate in the work of the ACC through an expanded ALMA Coordinating Committee. Members of this expanded ACC for Japan were announced as M. Shibata (MEXT), T. Godai (Director, Japanese Space Commission), H. Okuda (ISAS), Y. Tanaka (Board of Councilors, NAO-J), N. Kaifu (Director-General of NAO-J), S. Ikeuchi (Science Council of Japan) and Kodaira (President, General Research University). It seems to me there should be six perhaps, not seven names here so perhaps I have erred in this list by being too inclusive. Please see the press release. The AEC/ALG and IPT leaders will meet in Paris on 10-11 April to incorporate Japan into the Project planning. Ishiguro and Kawabe are the JP representatives to the Expanded AEC. Catherine Cesarsky, ACC Chair. directed the project leaders to concoct a plan for a minimal project, apropos to NSF's purported desire to cost things out at somewhere around $660M, with a plan for augmentation of this up to the full 1.5*(554.2)*.9 budget which we had thought possible previously. This is to be done by 11-12 June for review in Garching by the ACC. So the dream remains... The E-ACC will meet in Munich 11-12 June to discuss this and planning for phase 2. They will meet again in October, after an ASAC meeting in September.
Any volunteers to man the ALMA booth? Abstract deadline tomorrow. The lucky one gets to wear my ruby slippers.

ASAC The ASAC meets on Thursday. Brian wrote a memo for the ASAC discussion on Data Manipulation plans; The Memo.

The plan for the calibration meeting has been published. Do we agree? The philosophy is to concentrate on calibration types which will be common to nearly all observations. What has been missed? Primary beam calibration?

The synergies of ALMA with the GSMT Conference will be in DC the first part of May. The one day workshop has the goals of (1) delineating potentential synergies between ALMA and a 30-m O/IR telescope (the Giant Segmented Mirror Telescope, GSMT, described in the decadal survey); (2) defining issues for more detailed studies aimed at deeper understanding/quantification of those synergies; and (3) planning a broader community-based workshop to be held in winter, 2001. The workshop will be small (fewer than 15 invitees), informal and focussed on defining next steps rather than reaching definitive conclusions. Participants will summarize from her/his perspective a key science problem for which joint GSMT and ALMA observations would significantly enhance solution. Specifically, we would like to summarize:

Marc Sarazin has examined some of microclimatic events from the CBI logs--the ones in December. Looks like pure bad weather to me. Did anyone send him the May dates?? Do we want IRMA at Chajnantor????
