News - Wootten

News from the ACC, the DH meeting, and the 10 April ASAC meeting.

Project book updates on track--ALMA by 21 April.

Chapter 2 can be read, and a preliminary version of Chapter 3 (not yet) as well as Min's revision of Chapter 15.

We need to turn in a March report by 12 April--here is what I have--comments?

Calibration and Imaging Division Monthly Report for March 2000.

Activities in March included preparation for and attendance at the first ALMA Science Advisory Committee (ASAC) meeting in Leiden March 10-11. The ASAC reaffirmed their support of the project and issued a 45 page report containing advice to the project on various matters. Yun chaired a Conceptual Design Review of the ALMA Configuration, held in Tucson 20-21 March, at which plans were laid out to reach a Design Review in the early fall of 2000. Butler presented site data at the Configuration review, and prepared a new digital mask, incorporating changes suggested at the review, for configuration siting work. He also compared Chajnantor and Pampa la Bola phase stability data, and worked further on water vapor radiometry. Radford organized a Site Characterization Review was held in Tucson on 22 March to review progress and to identify priorities for testing in the coming year, which emphasize reaching understanding of the water vapor content above Chajnantor, especially at 183 GHz. He continued development of the nutating secondary plan for the prototype antennas. Mangum worked on Prototype Interferometer Evaluation Plan (PIEP), the ALMA Pointing Model, and calibration schemes for ALMA.

Configurations - Yun

Tucson meeting review. A simulation process was agreed to, to evaluate imaging properties of the various arrays. Min has received only a few images so far. Al will try to get FITS image of Mundy's protoplanetary disk. Telephone meeting: 20 April at 11 am EDT is planned in the conference room.

FY2000-2001 Budget

As you may recall, it was decided to go with a two year budget, since the FY2001 one was too small to survive on. We need to know about items we will need to purchase ASAP. So far I have input on Site Characterization only.
