ALMA - Tom Lehrer

The loveliest girl in Vienna
Was Alma, the smartest as well.
Once you picked her up on your antenna,
You'd never be free of her spell.

Her lovers were many and varied
From the day she began her - beguine.
There were three famous ones whom she married,
And God knows how many between.

Alma, tell us,
All modern women are jealous,
Which of your magical wands
Got you euros and dollars and yens?

The rest.

News -- Wootten

AAS Meeting -- I will be there Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Brochures and a new display will be there. I am still trying to find pieces of ALMA for display.

News - Paris, EIE, etc.

The charge from the EACC to the EAEC is: "Prepare a draft recommendation on the definition of the three-way ALMA, for discussion at the next EACC meeting 12-13 June 2001. The recommendation should define a three-way project with a value per partner for Phase 2 of 220 M USD (FY2000). The recommendation should also consider what could be accomplished with an additional 10 percent funding."

Our (Science and Imaging) budget is purely people and travel, with very little for the site monitoring. The goal at the meeting is an increase in our funds for the total project by 1.5.

ASAC The next ASAC meeting will be held 17 May at 1415UT. The proto-agenda has links to documents. We will discuss them also.

Please see my comments on SSB/DSB operation of ALMA.

    Calibration -- All

The deadline for the reservations for the calibration meeting has passed. Time to start assessing where we are and getting documents.

    Configuration Meeting upcoming!

Work is progressing apace. Kogan has been doing good work with the compact configuration, including discussions with the antenna group, and should shortly have a solid plan upon which to build the larger configurations. Conway is at Chajnantor with the 2001 Austral Fall campaign there. Butler's new mask has been released as ALMA Memo 364. Radford has made the new DEM covering 51 x 51 km with either 50 m or 250 m pixels. Guilloteau, Gueth and Pety are working on the designing the ALMA Compact Array (ACA) configuration and ALMA configurations also.

We should discuss these and other items soon lest our thinking diverge. I propose a telecon to occur a few days after the conclusion of the Chajnantor campaign, specifically 1400 UT on 18 May.

We would like to invite you to participate in a one-day workshop at the AURA Headquarters. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The goals of the workshop are:

    (1) delineating potential synergies between ALMA and a 30-m O/IR telescope (The Giant Segmented Mirror Telescope, GSMT, described in the decadal survey)

    (2) defining issues for more detailed studies aimed at deeper understanding/quantification of those synergies

    (3) planning a broader community-based workshop to be held in winter, 2001. The workshop will be small (fewer than 15 invitees), informal, and focused on defining next steps rather than reaching definitive conclusions

Travel information and instructions will be forwarded in an email from Kathy English sometime this week. NOAO will reimburse travel and incidental expenses for all participants.

To ensure a successful and scientifically stimulating meeting, we are asking each participant to prepare and circulate 5 days in advance of the meeting a BRIEF presentation summarizing from her/his perspective a key science problem for which joint GSMT and ALMA observations would significantly enhance solution. Specifically, we would like you to summarize:

-- the goals of the science programs (broadly stated)

    -- key objectives

-- key measurements: with ALMA; GSMT

-- potential complementarity with NGST; SIM; other space facilities

    -- identification of ALMA/GMST synergy

-- issues for discussion or study

We very much hope that you will be able to participate. Please indicate your availability both to us and to Kathy English (kenglish@noao.edu) at NOAO. Kathy will be coordinating the meeting.
