BIWEEKLY CALENDAR OF THE ALMA PROJECT at NRAO April 12 - April 26, 2004 ******************************** THIS BIWEEK *********************************** From: Fred K. Y. Lo Subject: Reorganization of the ALMA Division In view of the magnitude of the tasks in both the construction and the impending operations of ALMA, I have decided to replace the ALMA Division by (1) the ALMA Project Office, responsible for North American ALMA construction activities and (2) the North American ALMA Science Center (NA-ASC), responsible for supporting the science use of ALMA by the North American astronomical community. The NA-ASC will also be responsible for the core functions in support of ALMA operation in Chile and the research and development activities in support of future upgrades of ALMA. The Head of the Project Office is the NA ALMA Project Manager who will report functionally to ALMA Project Manager in the Joint ALMA Office and administratively to the NRAO Director. The Head of the NA-ASC will report to the NRAO Director and coordinate with the ALMA Observatory in Chile on the core functions. Darrel Emerson, current Head of the ALMA Division, will become NA ALMA Instrument Scientist in the Science IPT and will play a key role in the commissioning of ALMA, among other responsibilities. Darrel will remain as Chair of the Observatory Technical Council and of the ALMA NA Technical Advisory Committee (ANATAC). Until the Tucson office is shut down, Darrel will also be Deputy Assistant Director in charge of Tucson operations. I am also very happy to announce that Paul Vanden Bout has agreed to become the first Head of the NA-ASC. I am sure you would all agree that one cannot find a more qualified person for this very important role within the the NRAO. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Band 3 (3mm) PDR went well but a prototype does not exist yet. The Band 6 (1.3mm) PDR went well; the panel was impressed by the performance of the prototype.
