---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALMA Science Advisory Committee Teleconference, 8 January 2003 Draft Minutes Participants: R. Bachiller, R. Booth, R. Crutcher, M. Gurwell, T. Hasegawa, R. Kurz, R. Lucas, J. Mangum, J. Richer, P. Schilke, P. Shaver, E. van Dishoeck, M. Walmsley, D. Wilner, C. Wilson, A. Wootten, S. Yamamoto, M. Yun The proposed agenda was adopted. 1) Status Report R. Kurz said it was hoped that the Bilateral Agreement would be signed on Feb 23/24. G. Mangum reported on developments with the prototype antennas. The hand-over of the Vertex antenna is foreseen for 20 January; the holography will then begin. The foundations for the other antennas are being made. The holography system and evaluation receivers are almost ready. A. Wootten mentioned the AMAC meeting planned in Socorro in January. All the IST meetings are geared to that. On the 24th is a meeting to go over plans for the site. He also mentioned the current problems with the 2003 budget, which could possibly have the result that ALMA ends up with less that $12 million rather than the planned $33 million. 2) Science IPT Report E, van Dishoeck gave a brief summary of the science examples discussed at the IST meeting on Leiden in December. A few cases are still missing. The available cases will be distributed, and ASAC members are encouraged to add examples if possible. Concerning the Science IPT and ESAC meetings held at Leiden over those three days, E. van Dishoeck said the IPT meetings were held jointly with the HIFI working group. On the 2nd day meetings were held on calibrators, and E. van Dishoeck suggested that this be done also at an ASAC meeting. There were discussions on IPT tasks; someone is still needed to work on polarization calibration. On the last day of the meetings the European work packages (WVRs, simulators etc) were discussed. 3) Report of Software IDR R. Lucas summarized the Software Design Review held in Garching on 9-12 December. The official PDR is due for mid-March. The meetings were full and productive. Two reports are available, and the URL will be distributed. The key areas were (1) the pipeline system (a meeting will take place at the end of January), (2) the data reduction user interface (requirements are to be written in the SSR), and (3) the role of AIPS++ (phase 1 completion is foreseen for Jan. 15, and other steps are to be done in parallel; the AIPS++ audit was presented, and significant changes proposed). C. Wilson said the practicalities of breakpoints were discussed. She said the rules of observation preparation are needed within the next year; a Board decision would be involved. E. van Dishoeck stressed the importance of keeping the possibility of breakpoints. 4) More Discussion of AIPS++ Audit M. Gurwell reported on the overview and prioritization of AIPS++ requirements. 67% of the Prioriy I requirements fall into the acceptable or acceptable with enhancements category. Problem areas are Caliration and editing, where 63% of the Priority 1 requirements are incomplete or not available, and Visualization, where 50% of Priority 1 are incomplete or not available. According to S. Meyers the audit will be done again, with more tests. Completion is at least a year away. C. Wilson pointed out the problem that at the PDR decisions will have to be made, before this new audit is completed. She said that there are 37/200 top-level requirements that are missing subsections. Most are in calibration and visualization. This will be monitored, and an AIPS++ presentation will be made at the ASAC face-to-face meeting. 5) Dates of Face-to-Face Meeting It was decided that the next ASAC to-face meeting will take place on 2-3 April, at IRAM in Grenoble. The question of the membership of the ASAC is still pending, waiting until the International Agreement is signed. Suggestions for agenda items should be sent to C. Wilson and P. Cox. 6) AOB T. Hasegawa reported that the effort towards construction funding in 2003-2004 remains on track. At the moment the existing level of funding continues for the next year. S. Yamamoto said that the project was receiving good reviews. 7) Next teleconference The next ASAC teleconference will take place on Wednesday 5 February at 15:30 UT.
