Abstract:

The goal of this project is the creation of an all-sky catalog of galaxies and other extragalactic objects, with high precision positions extracted from the HST Guide Star Catalog (GSC). The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) acts as the major resource of ancillary information. This catalog will provide new objects for study, as well as uniformly high-precision positions for all of the associated objects in NED. Our basic approach is to cross-identify existing objects in NED (more than 500,000) with non-stellar objects in the GSC. The cross-identification process is iterative, beginning with an initial phase of manual identification of selected objects, followed by the deduction of corresponding rules and relationships. These rules are then machine coded, and iteratively applied to larger NED samples. The finally established rule set is then applied to the whole NED database for a final identification pass with every NED object being included in either the identified or the unidentified list. The positions for identified GSC objects will be integrated into NED thereby providing all users with uniformly accurate, high-precision positions for all galaxies down to the limit of the GSC.
