Abstract:

The Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) Data Archive integrates many technologies to create an advanced image archive. The LASCO data reduction system handles hundreds of raw CCD images from the three LASCO coronagraphs and the EIT telescope each day. The archive has been designed to provide users with immediate access to 1 terabyte of solar image data contained in CDROM jukeboxes. Raw data from the SOHO satellite is processed by a network of workstations to automatically generate catalog entries and browse images which are put into a Sybase database as data reduction is done. Interested users are provided with access to the LASCO catalog and browse images via a World Wide Web interface. Actual calibrated images are made available to on-site scientists within minutes of the images being taken. The data is later put onto inexpensive writable CDROMs for distribution to Co-I institutes. This talk will discuss the design of the archive and the problem of distributing 1 terabyte of data to Europe and the U.S.
