Good. Many computing folk have not yet realized that librarians are
intrinsically their friends and colleagues. BUT! Not just any
librarians -- some of them are old fogies who still think that
libraries consist of cellulose fibers and carbon particles. Luckily,
the astronomy community is blessed with some of the finest, smartest,
most avant guarde librarians that I can imagine. They are information
management specialists.

 > Agree that it is time for an email exploder.

OK. Its name is "astroweb@fits.cv.nrao.edu" (administrative traffic to
"astroweb-request"). Traffic will be logged to the files
file://fits.cv.nrao.edu/fits/www/astroweb/astroweb.* (currently * is
9402).

I have added your name and H-M's name to the distribution list and
CC-ed it in this reply, so H-M should get a copy of this reply via the
exploder channel and you and I should get an extra copy.

PS: Today I added a new resource record to my master list from a
posting in a newsgroup, and did "make install" in my directory. It was
satisfying to see the automatic procedure update the pages. I have a
backlog of resource records to install...

	Greetings!

Thanks very much for your WWW page of Astronomy resources on the
Internet! Very interesting stuff.

I thought you might like to know that the Ames SPACE archive has been
moved to a new machine. So you may want to replace the URL in your
www/new_pictures.html#pictures page with the following:

	ftp://explorer.arc.nasa.gov/pub/SPACE/GIF

Thanks again for taking the time to set up all the Mosaic pages!

Subject: A day at home, snowed-in
Sender: astroweb-request@fits.CV.NRAO.EDU

Dear Friends,

A big ice/snow storm arrived last night. NRAO was closed
today. Schools were closed. Practically everything else was
closed. The roads are difficult if not impossible. Freezing rain
and/or snow is still coming down, so I have not yet begun to shovel
it. The work will be hard because there is a lot of ice. Sigh...

Anyway, I decided to spend the day in my study, on the modem,
improving the tools for processing <DT> files.

I made program 'dtsort' stronger. It now merges similar entries and
edits files into canonical form. I am pleased with this program now.

I built a new program 'dtcheck' which matches syntactic patterns
against the header, resource records and tail of a <DT> file. This
program found numerous typos and violations of SGML rules in my merged
list. (Most violations of SGML rules are ignored by Mosaic -- it is
very forgiving.)

I append 'make' output cut from another window.

Hey folks, I've been too busy to read for the last couple of weeks, but
I thought I'd pop in and tell you what I'm busy with.

By now, those of you on the Internet (which should include the majority
of the newsgroup readers) have heard of "World Wide Web." You might not
be sure what it is, etc. I'll leave you to talk to the local "Web-head"
[Web user] to find out the details.

Anyway, I have a fun little demo that uses an Ingres report to create a
Web document. The report is run automatically each morning, and then
run through some scripts to create indicies and hyperlinks. Finally, it
is put up for everybody to see.

Use the URL "http://fractal.ucs.indiana.edu/", then choose "Education
Program Catalog" from the first screen. On the Index page, go to the
bottom and choose the picture of Trevor the big cat, and it'll show you
all the source that are used to create the catalog. You can view the
catalog from there, or from the index page.

Enjoy yourselves. I'll look into formatting the FAQ and making it
available there, also.

Aldea Communications wants to help people find each other on the Internet,
so the concept of NetPages(tm) was developed. NetPages is an Internet
email address directory based on the "phone book" concept with white and
yellow pages. It will be published twice a year, with the first edition
coming out in March, 1994. The first edition will be distributed in
hard-copy at UNIFORUM and electronically for downloading on the Internet.

You may make a white pages listing free of charge. All information is
optional. Your listing will be sent to you prior to the compilation of the
directory for verification. Yellow pages listings are available in the
NetPages for those of you with more information to deliver. Contact us for
pricing.

If you have any questions or comments, write to netpages@aldea.com or call
1-800-TO ALDEA (619-943-0101). All listees will be notified of the
electronic Internet "pickup" spot in March.

Bob, Hans-Martin,

About an hour ago I did a 'make install' to change the version of
http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/astronomy.html that the end-users are
seeing. The page http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/yp_master.html is the
merged list of this release in canonical format.

An interesting new feature of this release is the merging of resource
records. An example is the record(s) for EUVE in my 'Space
Observatories' category. The input file contains two records for EUVE,
with the same URL but different text. One of them is now appended to
the other one, indented and with a note saying 'The following resource
is similar (same URL, different text):'. Obviously I intend to edit my
merged file to combine the duplicated information into one resource
record.

The syntactic checker program 'dtcheck'
(file://fits.cv.nrao.edu/fits/www/astroweb/dtcheck) is working rather
well now. I invoke it in my Makefile, and it has already found some
typos.

I have started building another program called 'dtdiff'. It is going
to compare two <DT> files and generate a page of differences between
the two sets of resource records. I expect that I will be able to use
the output as an automatic 'What's New' page, and it will also be a
useful tool when maintaining the resource database.

I made many changes to program 'dtsplit' to make it more easily
configurable. My assumption is that others may want to use it, and
that they may want to have a very different arrangement of their
categories and pages. For example, the ST-ECF, STScI and NRAO pages
have three different arrangements. I am now very near to the point
that dtsplit could generate any of the three styles. Currently the
configuration information appears in the BEGIN{} section of the AWK
program file://fits.cv.nrao.edu/fits/www/astroweb/dtsplit (dtsplit is
still being modified, and has various things commented-out). It is
possible to have special header text for any output page (I am using
this feature for several of my pages -- see the text at the top of my
"Astronomy Text-Searching Servers" page.) It is also possible to
append special text to all of the output pages, and I am using this
feature to add the <ADDRESS> lines at the bottom.

At the moment my pages do not say anything about what is happening
with all of our discussions and development efforts, but I will
probably put some indication into my home page soon. I have two things
in mind: (1) users should be told to send additions and change reports
to astroweb@fits.cv.nrao.edu (so both of you will see them) and (2) my
pages need to acknowledge the fact that they now contain resource
records from the ST-ECF pages. I have added only part of the ST-ECF
resources, and I have not yet fully configured the categories to
support the ones I have installed, but some of Hans-Martin's records
are definitely present in the output (e.g., the EUVE case mentioned
above). I expect to have all of the ST-ECF resources integrated within
about a week, and also to catch up with my backlog of new items and
change orders.

-Don

This is going to add a lot of value to the database. A periodic report
of up/down history could be very informative.

It works, and the result is definitely a useful capability. It has
the advantage that it indexes *everything*, including invisible
information like the components of URLs and the CATEGORY strings. Text
added in the <DD> sections will make such WAIS searches even more
effective.

Yes. My first test was "eso", and it failed. Later I tried that again,
and it worked.

Indeed it could.

I will fetch your file. Is it visible via anonFTP as well as URL?

I don't understand your description of the problem. My pages are being
indexed, but I have not really tested that. I need to.

Does such a thing exist? Are you thinking of using it on <DT> files?

What would the second index contain?

Thank you for the work you did. I FTPed your file. I used Emacs
keyboard macros to transform it into canonical form. I inserted
CATEGORY lines with code 'stecf'. I then modified my Makefile to cat
my file with your file and feed the result to program dtsort. I
configured dtsplit to put code 'stecf' in the 'Misc' page
(http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/astroweb/yp_misc.html) as a temporary
expedient. Within a day or two I will be able to substitute your codes
for 'stecf', and produce a completely merged list, with probably 200+
records. Program dtsort is doing exactly what I intended: it makes it
possible to merge these lists by trivial means (only a 'cat'). I
append the output from the 'make'. The combined file is 55 KB. -Don

Dear Bob and Hans-Martin,

I have integrated Hans-Martin's resource records with mine. There are
duplicate records to be pruned, various classifications that need to
be changed, and text to be added/deleted/revised, but the bottom-line
fact is that my new pages are no longer just my work, they are a union
of the two previous sets of pages. I have revised my home page to
reflect this fact. The new introductory text also has a pointer to
STScI.

I have deleted my temporary files and old versions, and have committed
myself fully and irrevocably to the new system. I am pleased with the
way the <DT> format has worked out. Several recent new resources
received by Email included paragraphs of text description, and I just
put these into <DD> fields. A few minutes ago I wanted to check the
classification of a resource, so I clicked on it, got its home page,
which began with a historical overview paragraph. I cut that paragraph
out of the Mosaic window and dropped it into the <DD> field intact.
This system works. I have not yet installed OWNER records; that will
be hard work, and will take a lot of time.

The combined STECF-NRAO database is 262 records totalling 55.8_KB, and is:

     http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/yp_master.html
      ftp://fits.cv.nrao.edu/fits/www/yp_master.html

I intend to add configuration-option features to dtsplit until it can
make pages that are similar to the current STScI and STECF pages.
Also, I am still working on dtdiff in the background.

Should I proceed to integrate the STScI records with the STECF-NRAO
merged database? If "yes", what anonFTP address? I really like the
<DD> paragraphs that many of the STScI resource records have! (the
WAIS engine will like them too)

I append the 'make install' output for the run that did the final
merger of the two databases.

Best Regards,
Don

Our combined resource list is much richer than the original lists.
The two of you are welcome to fetch whatever you want.
One of the yp files is a start toward emulating the STECF page.

Bob, Hans-Martin,

What will be our policy on the old-style WAIS gateway URLs?

I suppressed them in my WAIS URLs several weeks ago after Sarah
Stevens-Rayburn asked why I was still offering both gateway and direct
URLs. I decided that now, more than two months after Mosaic 2.0, I
will no longer have sympathy for users of Mosaic 1.0.

It is my impression that Lynx now automatically uses a gateway for
wais://* URLs. Is this correct?

I was about to do a big string replacement, but decided to ask for
your opinion(s).

Hans-Martin, Bob,

I put a rule into program 'dtsort' which replaces 'ftp:' with 'file:'.
I did this after checking the discussion in the <A
HREF="http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/demoweb/url-primer.html"> URL Primer
</A>. I hope that you (plural) approve of this change.

This rule caused dtsort to merge 5 duplicate resource records.
The current count is exactly 400.

Dear Don, 25-Feb-94

our system manager discovered that with Xmosaic, through "astronomy on the
Internet" (http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/astronomy.html)
"observing resources" and "optical observatories" , choosing "obs. de Lyon"
one can connect to our area for anonymous ftp.

This server is in fact used only for private exchange of the scientists of
'Observatoire de Lyon' and their collaborators, and does not contain
general and public information on the observatory. You can keep the pointer
to my file online.txt, but at present we would prefer if you could delete
the pointer to display our ftp directories to the public.
In case Bob Jackson or H.-M. Adorf had pointers to this as well, can you
inform them?

Thanks,
Heinz & Marie-Helene Lassalle [our 'watchdog'...]

Bob, Hans-Martin,

After editing the WAIS section, I still find redundant resources in
the category listings. This is because we have old gopher URLs that
did searches of files or else talked to WAIS servers. Also, I think
some remote login URLs are simply search services which now also have
WAIS servers.

I propose to remove redundant gopher-search URLs from the database. I
also propose to remove redundant remote login search-service URLs
unless they have some value-added that is not contained in associated
WAIS/HTTP servers.

More generally, we have gopher and FTP URLs for organizations that
also now have HTTP URLs.

I propose that such resources be deleted unless they have some value
which is not present in associated HTTP servers. If there is value,
then I propose that references to those gopher/file URLs be embedded
in the <DD>..</DD> sections for the HTTP servers.
