In an effort to relieve Don of the burden of doing
all the editing, I have created a tool which allows
any one of us to edit the master list.

	ALPHA VERSION ALERT
	ALPHA VERSION ALERT
	ALPHA VERSION ALERT

There are two versions of the client tool:

1.
   http://stsci.edu/astroweb-html/putastrowebfile

A Tcl script which take the input file, creates
a HTML file from it and opens your HTML form compliant
client on the file. (No I have not tested it on Lynx.)

2.
   http://stsci.edu/astroweb-html/putastrowebfile.html

A slightly abbreviated version of the file created
by the above tool. You edit your master file and
insert it into this template.

On the server end, I have written a script which uses
CVS and supports the following CVS actions:

	DIFF
	UPDATE
	COMMIT

The DIFF command compares your file with the one
in the CVS archive on the server.

The UPDATE command returns your version updated
by any changes

The COMMIT command puts your version into the
CVS archive and updates a accessible copy at

   http://lor.stsci.edu/astroweb/astroweb/inp_astroweb.html

We all could edit the file and Don could then extract
it and create his yp_master stuff.

There is some security:

set awpassword(adorf) {}
set awnode(adorf) eso.org
set awpassword(anton) {}
set awnode(anton) mso.anu.edu.au
set awpassword(dwells) {}

set awpassword(heck) {}
set awnode(heck) cdsxb6.u-strasbg.fr
set awpassword(jackson) bob
set awnode(jackson) stsci.edu

You each have a username.

Send me a password.

The script even checks that the client is in
the awnode domain. Are the domains correct?

Dear Friends,

Please find below a TeX file as a *very first* draft of a short presentation
of AstroWeb for the CDS Information Bulletin. The strict deadline for the
next issue of this periodical is May 15, so I would need your input as soon as
possible. I am sorry for the short delay, but I was busy during the past weeks
with intense work on other projects.

I organized the paper along the following structure: AW aim and purpose,
membership, structure of the documents, how to get connected to AW, how to
contribute to AW. I deliberately excluded historical and technical details
that are not of direct interest to potential AW users and kept the paper as
short as possible to have a chance it be read by as many people as possible.
You will notice that I often used excerpts of existing AW documents. A couple
of figures will be added.

The paper for Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. could have the same structure if you
feel it appropriate. We could be more specific on the categorization of entries,
but, definitely, this paper should be short too in order to facilitate
acceptance.

Please check your affiliations as I am not sure I got all of them right. Be also
careful there is no political statement implying youself or your institution
beyond what it should be.

All the best,
Andre.

\bigskip \bigskip \noindent {\yy 1. Generalities}

\noindent
AstroWeb is a new WorldWideWeb (White, 1993) resource providing links to
astronomy resources available on Internet and using the Mosaic (Harding, 1994)
client tool. Links are anchors or harpoons to the listed resources
provided through implicit Universal Resource Locators (URLs) that can also be
pointers towards anonymous ftp accounts as well as towards gopher (Anklesaria
\& McCahill, 1993) services.

\noindent
This AstroWeb database of resource records is maintained by the authors who
are members of the {\ip AstroWeb Consortium} and located at five institutions:
CDS, MSSSO, NRAO, ST-ECF and STScI (see the detailed affiliations above).

\noindent
Each of these institutions supports a version of the AstroWeb service. The
five separate versions have different styles and contents, but all are
computed from the same master database, which is coded in an agreed
interchange format.

\noindent
The AstroWeb database merges resource listings that were earlier maintained
independently at the five institutions in a effort of providing a unique and
more complete resource database. This eliminated also the need to check
several different and largely redundant lists.

\bigskip \noindent {\yy 2. Structure of AstroWeb Documents}

\noindent
Each resource record is categorized and many resources have a paragraph
describing the resource and containing links to other records (see example
in Fig.\ 1). Different presentations of the master listing are available,
sorted by category, Internet domain, protocol and name, and name. There is
also a searchable version of the merged resource listing, using a WAIS
(Fullton, 1993) index.

\noindent
The database is queried on a regular basis to identify which URLs no longer
work and the merged listing is edited to reflect these changes.

\noindent
Fig.\ 2 reflects the current statistics of the various categories of entries
in the master database. It would be interesting to compare them with the
situation by the time this report is read.

Dear Friends,

You will find below the TeX file of the paper submitted for the CDS
Information Bulletin, including the only suggestions for changes I
received from Bob. There will be two pictures, both screen copies:
Don's homepage for AstroWeb and the CDS Astroweb homepage (since we
are publishing this paper in the CDS Bulletin).

As to Astron. Astrophys. Suppl., I suggest we use basically the similar
stuff, but with another second picture. Suggestions?

All the best,
Andre.

\bigskip \bigskip \noindent {\yy 1. Generalities}

\noindent
AstroWeb is a new WorldWideWeb (White, 1993) resource providing links to
astronomy resources available on Internet. Links are anchors or hypertext
references to the listed resources provided through implicit Universal
Resource Locators (URLs).

\noindent
The links provide transparent access to information provided by WorldWideWeb,
Gopher (Anklesaria, 1993), Anonymous FTP, WAIS (Fullton, 1993), USENET News,
and Telnet services.

Fig.\ 1 reproduces the top of the CDS AstroWeb
home page.

\noindent
The AstroWeb database merges resource listings that were earlier maintained
independently at the five institutions in a effort of providing a unique and
more complete resource database. This eliminated also the need to check
several different and largely redundant lists.

\bigskip \noindent {\yy 2. Structure of AstroWeb Documents}

\noindent
Each resource record is categorized and many resources have a paragraph
describing the resource and containing links to other records.
Different presentations of the master listing are available,
sorted by category, Internet domain, protocol and name, and name. There is
also a searchable version of the merged resource listing, using a WAIS index.

\noindent
The database is queried on a regular basis to identify which URLs no longer
work and the merged listing is edited to reflect these changes.

\noindent
Fig.\ 2 reflects the current statistics of the various categories of entries
in the master database (from the NRAO AstroWeb home page). It would be
interesting to compare them with the situation by the time this report is read.

If you want access restricted to those aliases

then

James,

I just received your note expressing your willingness to publish our
note on AstroWeb conditioned to the fact we mention in the abstract
that A&A abstracts are accessible on WWW.

I appreciate your a priori positive position towards our paper and I
understand your interest in having this mentioned in our abstract,
but I am afraid that, if we do this, this would be unfair for the
hundreds of other services and organizations listed in AstroWeb that
could complain we did not do the same about them.

Our feeling here is that the resource `A&A abstracts/WWW' (already
announced actually in A&A 284 (1994) E1 & A&ASuppl. 104 (1994) 1) is
more an A&A/CDS matter than an AstroWeb one. We would rather suggest a
specific paper on this matter either within the scope of CDS WWW services
or of CDS yellow-page services. Such a paper would also allow, on one hand,
future usage of this A&A abstracts service to be better referenced and, on
the other hand, a more adequate recognition of the distinct contributions
to this service and AstroWeb (in other words, the authorships of the
papers should be different).

As a kind of compromise, we could always add in the AstroWeb paper an
illustration to the paper (a kind of screen copy of the corresponding
CDS Mosaic page), but, again, I think this is a bit out of the way of a
paper directly centered on the AstroWeb consortium.

This message is actually copied to the other members of this consortium
in order to trigger their reactions.

Andre.

your suggested compromise.

Those of you interested in the painting that Don selected to illustrate

the sister painting `Starry Night on the Rhone' which seems astronomically
quite accurate.

Dear friends,

I also agree with the idea of not explicitly advertising particular
resources in the A&A paper, since as Andre points out this would be quite
unfair to all the others also providing services on WWW.

James Lequeux's solution sounds fine to me too - while I'm not really
familiar with the politics involved, it does seem to me that it will remove
from us all responsibility for the comment about A&A's abstracts. It is maybe
more appropriate for such a note to be inserted by the editor anyway, since
the abstracts being advertised are his responsibility more than ours.

						cheers,

Subject: MOSAIC Server

I am in the process of installing a MOSAIC (Wide World Web, WWW) server in the
framework of the french ISO Center. At present, the server just gives a few
links to other interesting services as well as information relevant to those
who may want to apply for assistance to answer the Call for Proposals.

Many other services should be possible and we are still discussing which ones
to offer in a near future; CAM's Capabilities Simulator is just one exemple.

I learnt from Julian Sternberg the availability of ESA/ESTEC/SAI server and I
have added a reference to this service in my own ISO Center Welcome page.

The purpose of this e-mail is twofold:

1- to announce the French ISO Center server (accessible through
    http://iscam1.ias.fr); and
2- inquire from other ISO instrument teams if they have any intention of
setting up similar services (SAI have done it already) so that in due
time we can cross-reference each other

For those who may want to learn more about WWW, I recommend the article by
Hans-Martin Adorf in a recent ST-ECF Newsletter (number 21, april 1994)

Best regards,

Diego A. Cesarsky

Subject: update on AstroWeb at MSSSO
Sender: astroweb-request@fits.CV.NRAO.EDU

Dear friends,

You may have noticed that my version of AstroWeb at MSSSO has been undergoing
something of a facelift over the last month or so. This is now essentially
finished. The top-level file is still under the same URL:
	http://meteor.anu.edu.au/anton/astronomy.html

The main change is that I now regularly update local copies of the other
AstroWeb presentations. These are fetched once a day using scripts derived
from those used by Daniel Egret / Bob Jackson. The files are automatically
fetched and compared to previous versions and any differences are kept in a
separate directory, making it much easier to check for new URLs. I still add
URLs to the final database by hand but that's just my personal preference. I
also fetch and compare two files not in the official AstroWeb presentations:
	http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/astroweb/inp_incoming.html
	http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/Mosaic/Docs/whats-new.html
Bob, if you like I'll also include your "editable" master file in the list of
files to be fetched and checked. Currently I don't know its URL. In case anyone
is interested in the scripts I'm using, everything is kept in the directory:
	http://meteor.anu.edu.au/anton/astroweb/fetch/
The README file gives a reasonable, if somewhat terse, description of the
functions of the different scripts and how they relate to each other. Feel free
to copy/modify these scripts (improve them even -there's a lot of scope for
that), or just check them to see that I'm fetching the right files. (PS I note
that the text of the README file appears automatically, along with the files,
when the above URL is selected - it's kind of useful but I have no idea of
whether this is a real or bogus "feature" of Mosaic...)

One question I'd be interested in: - is (was) it the intention of Astroweb to
incorporate the CDS yellow-page URLs into the database? I have taken the
liberty of converting all the "personal" homepage URLs from CDS (url2.htm) into
the standard format, and these have been merged with the other records (some
minor changes being made to the other records in the case of alternate URLs) to
produce the final file:
	http://meteor.anu.edu.au/anton/astroweb/yp_topzone.html
- However if there is some political problem with doing this then I'll happily
remove all these URLs again. For the record there are now 883 URLs in this new
yp_topzone.html. Please feel free to fetch it. Some other minor changes have
also been made, primarily to the titles of university departments, in order to
increase the general consistency of URL names. But there's still a lot of room
for improvement in this area.

It's incredible just how quickly the Web grows and how fast one has to move
in order to keep up with it, even just the astronomy-related services -or is it
just me? Seems that a good way is to do a little each day, basically along the
same lines as a hobby. This also seems to match the growth pattern of www
itself.

						cheers,
						 - anton.

Sorry.
Am in process of redoing things.
