Sorry to bother you again: some days ago I asked you to
include a link to our server into the astronomy &
astrophysics preprint list. Could you please change the
now-existing entry from

Preprints of the Universitäts-Sternwarte

Universty Observatory Göttingen: preprints

because just by "Univestitaets-Sternwarte" it is not

Subject: New URLs to be added in AstroWeb
Sender: astroweb-request@fits.cv.nrao.edu

Hi Bob,

The following six e-mails (to you only) contain the new URLs for the areas:
1. Depts in South America
2. High energy observatories and experiments
3. Depts in Europe
4. Additional indexes and lists
5. Solar observatories
6. Space observatories

Files are in astrowebedit format and I have used your conversion
procedures to check the layout of the files. In total there are 99
new URLs. Please, note the following:

- I have added a new keyword: 'high_energy' to mean Xray, Gamma rays,
   neutrino observatories...
- Some of the resources have been grouped into one main entry with
several URLs given in the description. This was used in concrete with
   the following entries
    - ESA Establishments
    - Experiments in Gran Sasso facility
    - IUE (GSFC and VILSPA)
    - ISO (several urls.)
It is a compromise to collect the related URLs into a single point,
but then some entries could be duplicated in the already available
   database.

Please, send me your comments, and include the URLs into the
AstroWeb master database if you agree with the present version.

Regards,
Daniel P.

This is _excellent_ news, Sergio! I have revised "The AstroWeb
Consortium" <http://fits.cv.nrao.edu/www/astroweb.html>.

Perhaps it would be appropriate for the Consortium to post a message
to the Net three days from now, on April 6th, the anniversary of the
original announcement, in which we would announce the addition of
VILSPA and WWW-VL(LaPlata) to the Consortium.

from Jose Daniel Ponz to the AstroWeb database.

There are now 1400 separate entries in AstroWeb.

I suggest that we allow Hard Copies of the
AstroWeb database to be used by others with one
proviso:

The date of its generation from the Master Database
	be prominantly displayed.

Newspapers have dates on them.

All our pages (except for the CDS ones?) have
dates on them.

There is still a problem of how to identify and mark
the really and truly DEAD URL's in any hard copy.

definitely- the first anniversary of our original announcement of Astroweb is
something worth mentioning on the net.

I had to removed the Soudan II URL since it contained
an embedded $ and my software croaked on it.

In the old format pages, University of British Columbia
astronomy dept was listed (under canadian departments). I
cannot find it under departments in the new format. Thanks.

Thanks for pointing it out. It's in fact nowhere in the database (someone has
removed it by chance??.. or was it on a temporary page?) - in any case, I've
just put a new entry for it (http://www.astro.ubc.ca/) into the main database.
This should propagate within the next 24h to all our various Astroweb sites.

    Hi Bob,
Using Netscape there are not problems with this address...
But the address of DUMAN, under telescopes is wrong. The correct
           URL is:

           http://web.phys.washington.edu/local_web/dumand/aaa_dumand_home.html

hi there --
We're still working on refining our new server, but we'd love it if you
could change the entry you have for the University of Chicago
Astronomy and Astrophysics Department from something.bsd.uchicago.edu
to http://astro.uchicago.edu/

As we refine this server to be something more than a glorified brochure
(we're working on it!) I'll write up a blurb to go with the entry (highlighting,
for example, the Yerkes Observatory page and the CARA page), but
for now, please just change the URL in the entry you have and
don't add any blurbs. I don't think we're ready for prime-time yet!

Also, the gopher server granta.uchicago.edu suffered a fatal disk
error several months ago and will never be resurrected. I didn't
notice any references to it, but just in case I missed it, I wanted
to let you know.

Thanks for all your hard work!
Luisa Rebull

Have a look at "The Macmillan Dictionary of Astronomy", by Valerie
Illingworth, Macmillan Reference Books. Also the Institute of Astronomy (or
the Royal Greenwich Observatory, can't remember) at Cambridge is offering
some good introductory pages on specific topics.

Asking for something "that covers all basic concepts" is too much for the
moment, I believe.

**The Third GVU World-Wide Web User Survey** has started, and we
encourage TidBITS readers to go and be counted. One of the
problems that has stymied people trying to figure out who uses the
Internet is that there isn't much hard research. I can't speak to
the validity of this study over others, but it appears to be
fairly complete. And (I'll come clean here) one of the questions
asks what computer you use, so we Macintosh users should make sure
we're counted. The complete survey takes about ten minutes to
  complete. [ACE]

amateur. Now I wonder if he has professional training. I append his

LEDA database has no text to present it. Is it possible to add one?
Here is the text we have chosen. Thank's!

Created in 1983, LEDA is the oldest Extragalactic Database. It gives more than
60 of the most important parameters for about 100.000 galaxies. It provides
charts and images through an X11 interface. In addition, a batch mode is availab
le and also a very powerful SQL-like query language

According to the WWW Virtual Library statistics
<http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/DataSources/bySubject/Statistics.html>
the AstroWeb database ranks 16th among the most popular topics. I have no
idea how the statistics was accumulated.

    Hi Hans-Martin,
Really this is not the true statistics, because the
Astro pages are tipically in the top five of the WWW-VL.
If you look the statistic, this number is for January 28,
it's very old! (The statistics for my page are computed
for the peolple at CERN and, in the lasts months, there was
problems with the movement of the WWW Initiative from the
                    CERN to the MIT...)
I'm working with the CERN's people in new statistics...
                    OK, seeya,

                                                        Sergio ;-)
