   Hi Joseph,
My name is Sergio and I'm member of the AstroWeb Consortium.
For info about Amateur Astronomy look at:

       http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/DataSources/bySubject/astro/amateur.html

In this page there are a lot of clubs and list of other places...
             Good luck,

                                                            Sergio ;-)

AstroWeb has the virtue that user interface is decentralized,
>>>>> except for the search tools <<<<<<<.

I think it would be a good idea to decentralize the search
tools as well.

Do all this and you no longer have to point to anarky.stsci.edu for
searching.

.......................................................................

A. To make a local version of the WAIS search tool:

1. Build and install Tcl, Tk, and TclX:

	ftp://ftp.aud.alcatel.com/tcl/ftp.cs.berkeley.edu
		tcl7.3.tar.gz
		tk3.6.tar.gz
	ftp://ftp.aud.alcatel.com/tcl/extensions
		tclX7.3b.tar.gz

2. Build and install freeWAIS:

	ftp://ftp.cnidr.org/pub/NIDR.tools/freewais/

Actually only 'waisindex' and 'waissearch' are needed.

3. Build and install Lynx:

	ftp://ftp2.cc.ukans.edu/pub/lynx/

4. Here is the file 'index-master' used to update the WAIS index.
I run it in a nightly CRON job.

B. To make a local version of the Harvest search tool:

1. Obtain binaries for Harvest:

	http://harvest.cs.colorado.edu/harvest/gettingsoftware.html

2. Create a broker on your system, by running the command

	CreateBroker

All you have to do is to tell it to collect from the gatherer
at host:

	anarky.stsci.edu

at port:

	8500

and to do an incremental collection with compression.

3. You also need to make some changes to your HTTPD server
as described in the Harvest file INSTRUCTIONS.html.

4. In your toplevel directory served by your HTTPD server, add two
symbolic links like:

  lrwxrwxrwx  1 jackson        29 May  3 11:16 brokers -> /anarky/data1/harvest/brokers
  lrwxrwxrwx  1 jackson        31 May  3 11:16 gatherers -> /anarky/data1/harvest/gatherers

Sergio,
Link wais://ecf.hq.eso.org/hst-wfpc-im-text called "HST WF/PC-1 images "
in file "http://www.w3.org/hypertext/DataSources/bySubject/astro/astroweb/yp_
library.html" called " Astronomy-related Libraries " works fine for me
when I use Mosaic 2.5 (but fails when I use Netscape 1.0). Presumably this
is related to how the browser handles WAIS... I have a CERN proxy defined for
Netscape, so I guess the broken link in this case is due to CERN pulling out
of Web support.

Dear AstroWeb colleagues,

This is a heads-up alert.

I have been scanning the c.i.g newsgroup occasionally for information
related to coordinate systems for FITS WCS [World Coordinate
Systems]. (I am also interested in DEMs and ZIP-code databases for
personal reasons.) Various GIS [Geographic Information Systems]
people have been building URL lists, just as we did several years ago.
Several weeks ago I noticed one of these people complaining about the
increasing difficulty of keeping up, about duplicated efforts, etc. I
posted a simple followup, telling about our approach to the problem,
and giving the appropriate URLs. Since that time I have scanned the
c.i.g. subject lines once or twice a week. As far as I know this is
the first followup to respond to what I said.

Hello GISnetters,

the most interesting post on the topic was IMHO the one of D.C. Wells. I think
the AstroWeb consotium found a very promising way to solve the problem of
keeping information together, update, complete, well structured and reliable.
We should absolutely adopt this approach to the topic of GIS (eg GISweb consortium
with the software and database of our astronomy clleagues, enhanced for GIS-
requirements). By the way, there once was a GeoWEB-List, but it seems to me it died.
Or have I lost the connection for technical reasons? And what happened to the
GeoWeb project. The aim was to make GIS information and data available.

No manual approaches (including the recently posted advanced list of Jim Aylward) will
be able to manage the information. There is too much to keep it update (worldwide)
manually.

So I think, the list-holders like Mr. Mc. Dermott, Mr. Thoen and the others should
get together, get in contact to the AstroWeb consortium and build up a GISweb
Database.

Unfortunately I won't be able to do much more on this topic because I leave the
university (and the multimedia Internet-connection) to start a job in the
private industry (i'll provide ADALIN-GIS of ADASYS GmbH in Germany). So i'll keep
my mouth shut in the future and leave you alone, lost in Hyperspace ;-)))

bye, Roland

Subject: Request to use screen images

MindQ Publishing is producing a series of CD-ROM's to teach people
how to use and work with the Internet. This is all new multimedia
material--not shareware taken from the network.

As part of this activity, we are including several examples of
interesting sites on the network. We would like to use images of
The AstroWeb pages as one of these examples.

What we are requesting is permission from you to use screen images
of some of your World Wide Web pages in our CD-ROM. While this
will only be a small portion of the complete product, we feel that
it will add an important sense of what the Internet is today, and will
highlight your Web pages. Of course we will include your copywrite notice
with the pictures, if you provide the wording you would like. If we include
these screen images in the final product, we will provide you with a free copy
of the CD-ROM. (If you want one, please let me know and provide an address.)

Please send your response to akobran@mindq.com.
You can also send any questions to this address, or you can reach
me at 703-430-0685.

Thank you for your help on this project

    Hi All!

Surfing the net I've found one reference to the AstroWeb in the
        page:

        Guides to Writing HTML Documents
        http://union.ncsa.uiuc.edu:80/HyperNews/get/www/html/guides.html

"The AstroWeb Consortium has a standard HTML Interchange Format"

        Nice!!!!!!!!!

                                                         Sergio ;-)

Hello... Perhaps I made a mistake in filling out the form
for my personal web page, as now that I have an entry
(Truelove, J. Kelly) on the list of personal pages, my
institutional affiliation seems to be absent. I would
appreciate it if the entry could be corrected to have
"UC Berkeley" or "Berkeley" in parentheses after my name.
Thanks for your help,

Kelly Truelove

This is file ASTROPERSONS.LIS = usernames for approx. 11000 astronomers
(92 percent Internet, 5 percent BITNET, 2 percent DECNET).
The 5 columns give: name, institution, network, email address
and date code. Networks are B = BITNET, D = DECNET, I = INTERNET,
U = UUCP. The date code indicates the date of the edition for which
update information was last received from the indicated institution:
Jan 88 (a), Jul 88 (b), Jan 89 (c), Jul 89 (d), Jan 90 (e), Jul 90 (f),
Jan 91 (g), Jul 91 (h), Jan 92 (i), Jul 92(j), Jan 93 (k) or Apr 94 (l).

For corrections to STScI entries, send email to library.

Corrections, and additional information for inclusion in the next
edition should be sent either by post, to Chris Benn at the
Royal Greenwich Observatory, Apartado 321, Santa Cruz de La Palma,
38780 Tenerife, Spain, or by electronic mail, to:

The RGO Email database has two different addresses:

 Novikov, Igor NORDITA I novikov@nordita.dk l
 Novikov, Igor Copenha I novikov@astro.ku.dk k

VRFY at the second address points to the first address.
VRFY at the first address points to a third address:

Hi,
The ADS Abstract Service now also includes a separate database
of Astronomical Instrumentation abstracts. Can you please update
our entry as follows?

Thanks,
