Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT - Linux for Astronomy CDROM

ANNOUNCEMENT - Linux for Astronomy CDROM

`The Random Factory' is pleased to announce the production of
a CDROM packed with Astronomical software built for use with the
`free' operating system - LINUX (a UNIX(tm) clone for i386/486/586
processors).

Finally, it is possible to run the same packages you
use at work, on a standard PC, utilising a full workstation
environment (X-windows, networking, NFS, etc). Thanks to recent
hardware advances, it is even possible to use a laptop computer.

CDROM DETAILS

The CDROM is formatted using the industry standard ISO9660
format (with RockRidge extensions). The first release contains a
full 650Mb, so future releases may have to be 2-disk sets.

PACKAGES

The following packages are included on the CDROM

AIPS (radio astronomy and image processing)
ASSIST (gui for IRAF and other packages)
                FITSIO (data exchange)
                glish (distributed processing)
IRAF V2.10.4 + contributed packages (general purpose)
                                                      ared
                                                      egodata
                                                      finder
                                                      fitsik
                                                      mem0c
                                                      psikern
                                                      rvsao
                                                      tables
                                                      stsdas
                KARMA (image processing)
                NEMO (stellar dynamics)
                MIDAS (general purpose)
                PGPERL (graphics)
                           SAOIMAGE (image display)
                SAOtng (imaging/graphics)
                StarBase (astronomy database)

All packages are the most recent versions available (Nov 1995).

The collection has been assembled with the assistance
of the worldwide astronomical software community. All the
packages may be run directly from the CD, or may be copied
to a local disk for increased efficiency.

DOCUMENTATION

The CDROM includes an integrated set of documentation
in HTML format, and many packages also include Postscript
format documents. The documentation is searchable using
included WAIS tools, and facilities are provided to setup a server to
provide WWW based searching of the database on your local
network.

A searchable database cataloguing over 6000 Astronomy related
World-Wide-Web resources is also included.

Source code is included where permitted by the package license
holders.

NEW TO LINUX ?

In case you have not yet experienced the advantages of LINUX,
the disk also includes a Linux `test drive' which can be
installed and run directly from MS-DOS.

AVAILABILITY

The single issue cost is $35 (+shipping), and the
CDROM is also available on a subscription basis,
which is updated twice per year to track new releases
of the main packages ($55 per year + shipping).

HOW TO ORDER

A PostScript order form may be downloaded from

        ftp://plum.tuc.noao.edu/lfa/orderfrm.ps

or you can print and complete the ASCII form appended to this message.

MORE DETAILED INFORMATION

A full listing of the disk contents and an on-line order form
are available on the World-Wide-Web at the URL.

Dear AstroWeb friends,

NRAO-Charlottesville discovered a serious computer security problem
several days ago. At first we completely disconnected this site from
the Internet. Then incoming Email service was restored by modifying
the packet filters in the main router; now outgoing Email service is
also available. Many other network services are still blocked. In
particular, the NRAO AstroWeb server is probably not currently visible
to the Internet. The computer operations staff expects that we will
restore full service within the next 48 hours.

Regards,
Don

section. What
I ended up doing was creating an entry under "The". Could
the entry in the database be changed so that the entry for
Miriad appears under "Miriad" rather than "The Miriad ..."

Dear Dr. D.Wells,

I have sent an e-mail message, which is attached at the end of this message,
in July 20, 1995. But it seems to me that the mail did not affect the contents
in your server. Please add our server's URL to your AstroWeb.

With Best Regards,

M. Hamabe

Dear Dr. D. Wells,

I am a Japanese astronomer who is cooperating with Astronomical Data
Analysis Center of Nat. Astron. Obs. Japan.

Recently, we officially started a distribution service of the
astronomical catalogs using anonymous ftp and a WWW server.

Therefore, we would appreciate very much if you could include
our URL into your AstroWeb page.

Our URL is

	http://adac.mtk.nao.ac.jp/index.html

and a brief discription of our data center is:

	Astronomical Data Analysis Center (NAOJ/ADAC)

Astronomical Data Analysis Center (ADAC) of National Astronomical
Observatory, Japan (NAOJ) provides all the catalogues in its
collection on-line, including the mirror copy of the CDS on-line
catalogues and journal tables. Both anonymous ftp and WWW interfaces
	are available.

Thank you very much for your cooperation, in advance.

With best regards,

Masaru HAMABE
