Fv 2.5 is Now Available
-----------------------

Version 2.5 of the fv viewer and editor for FITS format images and tables
and the associated POW image display and graphics tool is now available
from the HEASARC web site at:

           http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv

This major new release contains many new features and fixes all previously
reported problems. Versions are available for most Unix platforms
(including a new port to LinuxPPC and MkLinux for Macintosh) and for
Windows 95/98/NT machines.

The documentation for fv has also been expanded to include:

    - an overview of all the major features of fv and POW:
      http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/fv_features.html

    - a pictorial preview of all the main fv and POW windows:
      http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/fv_screen.html

    - an illustrated on-line tutorial that walks you through the
main operations that can be performed with fv and POW:
      http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/tutorial/fv_guide.html

    - and, html versions of all the fv and POW help files:
      http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/fv_help.html

Please send any comments, bug reports, or suggestions to

           ftoolshelp at olegacy.gsfc.nasa.gov

The fv development team currently consists of:

William Pence: Project Scientist, author of CFITSIO
Peter Wilson: Tcl/Tk programmer, fv/POW programmer
Lawrence Brown: Tcl/Tk programmer, original author of POW

fv and fitsTcl were originally written by Jianjun Xu.

A revised draft of "Representations of celestial coordinates in FITS" dated
1999/05/14 is now available from my home page

   http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/mcalabre

or from Eric's ftp area

   ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/egreisen.

This revision

  * Admits "yzLN"/"yzLT" CTYPE codes for longitude/latitude axis pairs; it
was felt that the 26 possibilities for "xLON"/"xLAT" would not be enough.

  * Augments the distortion function for the TAN projection to include 7th
order terms. This is sufficient to account for the complex distortions
    found in Schmidt plates.

  * Includes another header construction example, this one describing
selenographic coordinates for an image of the moon.

Time is running out to make further comments!

I had hoped to come with a more comprehensive list, but that carries
the danger that it will never happen, so I'll just provide the
comments as they come up. Two in this message.

On the subject of primary and secondary axis descriptions, the paper
does not say explicitly that one cannot have secondary descriptions
without a primary (i.e., say, CTYPE1P without there being a CTYPE1).
I don't think that is intended and it may be a good idea to say
explicitly that one can have a primary axis description without any
secondaries, but no secondary without a primary.
On the same subject, it may be good to clarify explicitly whether it
is allowed to have duplications (say, one has CTYPE1, CTYPE1A,
CTYPE1B, CTYPE1C, CTYPE1P, CTYPE1Q; and it so happens that
CTYPE1=CTYPE1C=CTYPE1C). I must admit that I shudder at the thought,
but others may want to attach special meanings to particular secondary
identifiers (P for physical, for instance) which could force one into
these duplications.

The second is RADECSYS. I think we need more values. Chandra is
going to churn out FITS files with RADECSYS='ICRS'; FK5 is certainly
not appropriate anymore.

In case anyone is interested, we have converted the FITS Standard
document (version 100-2.0) to HTML and have made it available
online at:

       http://archive.stsci.edu/fits/fits_standard/

Postscript and PDF versions should still be downloaded from
