FITS users,

There is an effort underway to understand and rationalize
the use of data formats within the NASA space sciences
community. I've appended a notice of this effort below.
The hope is to involve as many people in this
as possible. NASA's astronomy data is now largely provided
in FITS and, while there are no current plans for this to change,
the scope of this review includes astronomy data.

Please feel free to join the discussion at the site described
below.

Data Formats: A Community Alert

The Space Science community currently expends considerable
resources maintaining and evolving a wide variety of data formats. A
combination of internal and external pressures make it unlikely that NASA
will support all the currently existing formats into the future. A group
of concerned individuals who represent format developers, researchers,
project data managers, archive managers, and commercial tool vendors have
initiated a Format Evolution Process (FEP) and have convened an FEP
Committee, hosted by the NASA/Science Office of Standards and Technology.
During the next few weeks, you have an opportunity to join this process and
express your views before the shakedown begins. Working together, we can
ensure that the formats we find most useful will survive and evolve.

You can find a more detailed statement concerning our goals on the
WWW at http://ssdoo.gsfc.nasa.gov/nost/fep/. The dialogue is organized
into discussion forums focussed on various types of users, format
developers, and tool developers. An easy to use WWW form interface allows
you to express your opinions concerning the various formats you have used
and the functionalities you wish formats and their supporting software had.
Completed forms are posted on the WWW for others to read and comment on
via a web- based e-mail service which allows participants to follow
sequential threads of comments. There is also a forum on the potential
impacts of new standards and technologies on the formats. Participants are
encouraged to submit white papers on relevant topics or provide pointers to
such white papers.

We expect the web site to evolve into a NASA-wide resource for
information on formats and support services. Once sufficient material has
been submitted, we plan to convene a meeting of interested contributers to
draft consensus documents guiding future data format evolution. If you
use, store, provide, or manipulate data, you should begin participating in
this dialogue now.

Subject: FITS sample scaling
Newsgroups: sci.astro.fits

Hello. I have added support for FITS simple images to a program of mine and
while the image loads just fine sometimes I get very dark pictures with little
contrast. Using DISPLAY (a DOS picture viewer) I noticed that for these images
it says something like "sqrt scale", while on other it is "linear scale". I
have found no documentation on that feature so far, can someone explain what's
going on or point me to some document? Even the smallest hint will be
*very* appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, I've got some FITS files that I need to look at. What kind of program
will views this type of format? I know I can use IRAF, but how?

Also, does anyone know of any shareware programs for the mac or pc which will
display fits files? Thanks.. I apologize for the amateur nature of this

Have a look at http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~bcotton/fitsview.html. This
site has freeware FITS image viewers for Windows, Macs and
Unix/XWindows systems.

FITS Software Update
--------------------

For the benefit of new readers, and as a reminder to veterans, here is a
summary of some of the FITS-related software available from the HEASARC:

1. fv (v2.5)- a full featured viewer and editor for any type of FITS file,
including tables and images. Versions for most unix platforms (including Mac
and PC Linux), and a version for Windows 95/98/NT are available from
http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/

2. Several individual FITS utility programs are available from
http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/ftools_select.html:

fverify - program to verify that a FITS file
conform to the new FITS Standard

fdump - print out the contents of a FITS table
            to an ASCII file

fcopy - a simple file copy program that enables very
powerful filtering or row selection operations
            when copying a FITS file.

3. FTOOLS (v4.2) - this is the large package of FITS utilities and
data analysis programs, (including the above 2 items). See
http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools for more information.

4. CFITSIO (v2.032)- this is the C and Fortran subroutine interface library
for
reading and writing FITS files that is used by all the above software. It is
available from http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/fitsio/

Hello,

I am trying to use the FITSIO library (fortran version) under Linux
(RH6.0). Whenever I try to open a FITS image, I get an end of file
error message in the subroutione ftread.f

I know the FITS image is OK, b/c I opened it in ximtool no problem
(also, I used 3 different FITS images of different origins).

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

TIA,

If an EOF error occurs it will always happen in the ftread routine since that
is the routine that reads records from the file. Typically this means the
program is trying to move to a nonexistent extension in the file, or the file
is corrupted some how. Send me more details and I'll try to help:
What is the size of the FITS file in bytes?
What are the BITPIX, NAXIS, and NAXISn keyword values?
What is the program doing when it returns this error?

Also, another simple thing to check is that the input status value = 0 in the
routine that is returning the error, and print out any messages on the FITSIO
error message stack, which might provide more clues.

Hello Bill --

I just wanted to thank you for FITSView! There's a lot of great technology
hidden behind its modest user interface. I am just about to release some
amateur/educational software that generates and uses WCS, and I have used
your program tons of times myself and for demonstrations to show why
everyone should be using WCS. Your histogram EQ is virtually perfect for
eyeball work without having to adjust the B and C controls.

The port of fv from the FITS Tools is abysmal as far as its user interface
goes. It won't even fit on an 800x600 screen, and the controls are
unbelievably baroque. Just try blinking images :-) Plus it has to install a
monster load of emulation junk just for that one program.

Anyway, thanks for a nice tool.

Bob,

Sorry you didn't have a good first impression of fv. First, make sure that
you are using the latest 2.5 version that was released in May 1999; it sounds
like you may have an old version.

Fv is designed to view and edit any FITS file, possibly containing multiple
tables and/or images, so the user interface has many menus and options.
There is a short tutorial/user's guide available from the fv web site that
explains how to use many of the features for new users.

As for fitting on an 800x600 screen, you can select a default image window
ranging from 300x300 to 700x700 pixels in size, which should suit any screen
resolution. Regardless of the default size, you can interactively resize the
images by dragging a corner with the mouse.

Blinking of 2 images can be done very quickly and easily: open and display
both images (they initially appear side by side on the display canvas), click
on the 'merge graphs' option to combine both images in the same graph, then
click on 'blink images' to start the blinking. You can blink any number of
images at one time (not just 2), and the position registration of the images
is determined by the WCS information, so the images do not need to have the
same size or scale. You can also pan and zoom within the images while the
blinking is in progress.

Other useful image display features in fv are:

  - draws a grid of RA and DEC lines over the image
  - contour plots can be generated and combined with other
images (e.g., draw optical contours on top of a radio image)
  - brightness/contrast and panning/zooming are interactively
adjustable by dragging the mouse over the image
  - 20 different color mappings, and 3 different intensity scaling
options (linear, log, or square root) are provided.

Histogram equalization is not currently provided, but that is high on the list
of enhancements for the next release.

Finally, the installation of fv is intended to be easy and quick. The windows
.zip file is only 2.6MB in size. Fv is written in native Tcl/Tk code, so it
is not an emulation.

So, we hope you will give fv another try. It is available from the fv web site
at:

http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/

We can also send a version on CDROM to Linux PC users. Any questions,
problems, or suggestions about fv should be sent to:

ftoolshelp at athena.gsfc.nasa.gov

regards,
Bill Pence
(for the ftools group)
