Hi,

I am looking for someone who can correctly use the cfitsio.dll library
under Microsoft Visual Basic.
Thanks!

Subject: ANNOUNCE: CFITSIO.pm v0.92
Newsgroups: sci.astro.fits
Sender: owner-fitsbits at kochab.cv.nrao.edu

Hello again,

A new version of the Perl interface to William Pence's CFITSIO
subroutine library is available. For more information on the CFITSIO
subroutine library, see http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/fitsio

New features in CFITSIO.pm v0.92 include:

* Bug fixes: none. There are no known bugs, so please send those bug
  reports in!

* Most functions which read data from FITS files were doing an extra
malloc and memcpy when PerlyUnpacking(0) was used (e.g., reading
into piddles). This has been fixed.

* Minor updates to example programs.

Since the launch of Chandra (hurray!), I've been giving the bintable
routines in this module a very strong workout, and I am more than
pleased with its performance. Other routines have not been tested
nearly as much - in particular primary array and ASCII table routines.

This Perl module uses functions found only in CFITSIO v2.031 and later,
so you will need at least that version for proper installation. It has
been tested with both v2.031 and v2.032 on Linux (ix86, glibc) and
Solaris 2.6.

This version of CFITSIO.pm can be obtained at:
  http://hea-www.harvard.edu/~rpete/cfitsio/CFITSIO-0.92.tar.gz

And also on your local CPAN mirror under:
  authors/id/P/PR/PRATZLAFF/CFITSIO-0.92.tar.gz

As always, you can find the latest version of CFITSIO.pm at
  http://hea-www.harvard.edu/~rpete/cfitsio

Subject: fits and 12 bit images?

I've been reading the FITS Definition and was curious as to the best way to
represent 12 bit convertor data. Would the best approach be to just 0 pad the
upper four bits?

Subject: Coordinate Systems for Solar Image Data
Newsgroups: sci.astro.fits
Sender: owner-fitsbits at kochab.cv.nrao.edu
Precedence: bulk

I would like to open up the following (PostScript) document for discussion
within the solar physics and FITS community:

	http://orpheus.nascom.nasa.gov/~thompson/papers/coordinates.ps

Here are the title and abstract:

COORDINATE SYSTEMS FOR SOLAR IMAGE DATA

			      William T. Thompson

A set of formal systems for describing the coordinates of solar image
data is proposed. These systems build on current practice in applying
coordinates to solar image data. Both heliographic and heliocentric
coordinates are discussed. A distinction is also drawn between
heliocentric and helioprojective coordinates, where the latter takes
the observer's exact geometry into account. The extension of these
coordinate systems to observations made from non-terrestial viewpoints
is discussed. A formal system for incorporation of these coordinates
into FITS files, based on the FITS World Coordinate System, is
    described, together with examples.

Thank you,

William Thompson

Is it available somewhere else then in HEASARC site? I keep getting:

Could not connect to heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov: Connection refused.

A Proposal for Representing Compressed Images in FITS Format
------------------------------------------------------------

A small group of us have been experimenting with ways to represent compressed
images in FITS format and have drafted a proposal that we would like to submit
for comments or suggestions from other FITS users. The current draft proposal
is available in html format at:

http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/heasarc/fits/compress/compress_image.html

or in postscript format at

http://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/heasarc/fits/compress/compress_image.ps

In brief, our proposed technique is to first divide the n-dimensional image into
a rectangular grid of one or more subimages or 'tiles', then compress each tile
individually and store the resulting byte stream in a row of a variable-length
column in a binary table. Any number of different compression algorithms may be
supported by this convention and we specifically describe a few possible
algorithms in the appendixes to the proposal. The appendixes are currently
incomplete, but we eventually intend to provide a complete description of each
supported compression algorithm.

We are currently developing prototype implementations of this proposal. In
particular, I will be giving a presentation at next month's ADASS meeting that
gives a progress report on supporting this convention from within the CFITSIO
library.

This is a very interesting proposal. However, if I understand it right, only
one column in a binary table could support compressed data, which is pretty
restrictive. It would be better if multiple columns could be compressed to
better match the present capabilities of binary tables. Otherwise, for some of
us at least, it would be a major change in the way that binary tables are
organized. For example, in our own project, we use different columns for
different wavelengths.

It is a little confusing, but this proposal only applies to compressing images
that would otherwise be stored in a FITS primary array or IMAGE extension. The
compressed image bytes are then stored in a binary table, which serves as a way
of indexing the location of different pieces of the image. Being able to
compress ASCII or binary tables is also an important issue, but the current
proposal does not address that topic.

We need the full flexibility offered by binary tables for this compression
convention, so we don't want to invent a new type of extension with all the same
features. In the general case, the binary table containing the compressed image
will contain multiple rows (each compressed image tile goes into a separate
row), and multiple columns. There may be 2 variable length columns, one for the
tiles that could be compressed and one for any tiles that could not be
compressed. There can also be any number of other columns in the table
containing other parameters that are needed to compress or uncompress the image
tiles.

Only in the simplest case where an entire image is compressed as a single tile
would you end up with a binary table that has just a single row and potentially
only a single column.

The ADASS meeting in Kona is coming up and the FITS BoF is scheduled
for Monday night (October 4, 1999). At that time, we will discuss and
probably vote on sending the three World Coordinates papers to the
American, European, and Japanese FITS committees for formal votes.
Assuming that all is favorable, the three papers will then be
submitted to A&AS and become part of "the" FITS standard. If you have
not fetched and read these papers you really should do so. They had
their last major revisions in mid May, 1999. Since then, we
discovered that A&AS uses computer modern fonts rather than Times
Roman used by A&A, although both use the same LaTeX2e macros package.
We have had to rearrange things a bit and have made a few minor
wording corrections to accommodate this change.

The papers are

    ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/egreisen/wcs.ps.gz
(Paper I, general conventions, 96 kbyte)

    ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/egreisen/ccs.ps.gz
(Paper II, celestial coordinates, 169 kbyte)

    ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/egreisen/scs.ps.gz
(Paper III, spectral coordinates, 74 kbyte)

The ADASS poster and paper are also available as

    ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/egreisen/Poster99.ps.gz
(Mark did a lovely job, 59 kbyte)

    ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/egreisen/Paper99.ps.gz
             (Executive summary paper, 25 kbyte)

Please read these and be prepared to discuss them via e-mail or at the
ADASS.

                                   Thank you

                                       Eric Greisen
