Last I heard, the final draft was sent to Geneva for publication, but it will still be another month or so until copies are available. You can obtain all ISO standards through ANSI 1-212-642-4900. Ask for IS 12087-2. It won't be cheap; its a big document. For those that don't know, PIKS is a part of the ISO/IEC "Image Processing and Interchange" standard 12087. It defines an imaging model and a large set of operators that work on 4 dimensional (3 spatial and 1 temporal) multiband images (and interesting subsets, such as volumetric or 2D color images). It includes all of the functionality typically found in commercial systems and the classic image processing textbooks. It differs from systems like Khoros and AVS in that: 1) It is an ISO Standard 2) It was written to be implemented by different vendors so that the definition of its operators are very precisely defined. 3) It is an API, so it doesn't have the nice graphical programming paradigm of these systems. Instead, it defines a library of function calls to perform the operations. Some people may also be interested in other parts of the standard: A) A Common Architecture for Imaging (CAI) IS 12087-1. This defines the abstract data types, color models, etc. necessary for imaging. B) The Image Interchange Facility (IIF) IS 12087-3. This defines a standard data format for images and image related data along with an API to read/write/manipulate an image data file. Both of these parts were also approved for international standard publication, but the final editing is still being done. The first commercial implementations of PIKS are starting to become available. The next meeting of the ANSI group working on the IPI, X3H3.8, is in the Washington DC area in the middle of October. If anyone would like more information, e-mail me. I'm on the ANSI/ISO committee. What the hell is that? ACR-NEMA stands for American College of Radiology and National Electrical Manufacturers Association who jointly developed the standard that should: 1. Promote communication of digital image information, regardless of source format or device manufacturer; 2. Facilitate the development and expansion of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) that can also interface with other systems of hospital information; and 3. Allow the creation of diagnostic information data bases that can be interrogated by a wide variety of devices distributed geographically. This standard has evolved and is now designated Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Version 3.0 and embodies a number of major enhancements to previous versions of the Standard: a. It is applicable to a networked environment. The previous versions were applicable in a point-to-point environment only. b. It specifies how devices claiming conformance to the Standard react to commands and data being exchanged. Previous versions were confined to the transfer of data. c. It specifies levels of conformance. Previous versions specified a minimum level of conformance. d. It is structured as a multi-part document. e. It introduces explicit Information Objects not only for images and graphics but also for studies, reports, etc. f. It specifies an established technique for uniquely identifying any Information Object. You can reach NEMA on the net: nema@spaceworks.com The aformentioned documents are available at (FTP): rsna.org or: wuerlim.wustl.edu or: ftp.xray.hmc.psu.edu there is also some software on these sites.
