The first of NASA's three High Energy Astronomy Observatories, HEAO 1 was launched aboard an Atlas Centaur rocket on 12 August 1977 and operated until 9 January 1979. During that time, it scanned the X-ray sky almost three times over 0.2 keV - 10 MeV, provided nearly constant monitoring of X-ray sources near the ecliptic poles, as well as more detailed studies of a number of objects through pointed observations.

All Sky Automated Survey ( ASAS )
The All Sky Automated Survey is a project which final goal is photometric monitoring of approx. 10 million stars brighter than 14 magnitude all over the sky. A free, extensive, IDL-like interactive data analysis and display program and language for 32-bit computers, developed and used by the authors for scientific investigation of images of the Sun (but not limited to those). The source code is written in C (with X11) and is (Nov 1998) about 4.2 Mbyte in size, of which 670 kbyte is covered by the manual. Combined, the two telescopes routinely cover the entire millimeter and submillimeter windows from about 4.6 mm to about 0.6 mm, and at the HHSMT observations can be made all the way to 0.3 mm with PI instruments. The telescopes are operated around-the-clock for about 9 to 10 months per year for a combined 10,000 hours per observing season (about 1500 hours are dedicated to sub-mm wavelengths at the HHSMT). The ARO offices are centrally located in the Steward Observatory building on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson Arizona.

Astrographic Catalogue 2000 ( USNO )
The Astrographic Catalogue (AC) was an international effort designed to photograph and measure the positions of all stars brighter than magnitude 11.0. In total, over 4.6 million stars were observed, many as faint as 13th magnitude. This project was started over 100 years ago. The sky was divided among 20 observatories, by declination zones. Each observatory exposed and measured the plates of its zone, subsequently publishing the plate measures.
The U.S. Naval Observatory has completed data entry of the printed volumes of the AC, has completed the data reduction of each zone, and has converted the positions to the system defined by Hipparcos. The resulting catalog, called AC 2000, is now available.

AstroMB: Computer Aided Astronomy ( MBCAA )
The AstroMB software package provides a PC-based database, image viewer and planetarium to handle astronomical images and catalogs. Astronomical objects on images can be identified from catalogs. Observations at different energy range (e.g. X-ray and visible light) or at different times may be matched together. Astrometry and photometry can be performed automatically, with pattern recognition. The database holds the descriptions of many catalogs, such as radio sources, X-ray objets, minor planets, etc. It also holds the descriptions of more than 10,000 images, mainly from the ROSAT and Einstein Observatory satellites, and can be enriched with the user own data. The program is ASCOM compliant and can drive a telescope.

The Astronomical Image Processing System is a software package for calibration, data analysis, image display, plotting, and a variety of ancillary tasks on Astronomical Data. It comes from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. It is primarily for Radio Astronomy. There is a Usenet newsgroup alt.sci.astro.aips that deals with AIPS issues and has occasional interesting announcements. There is an AIPS memo that nicely describes the AIPS software system (PostScript, 189404 bytes). It contains one schematic diagram of the overall AIPS structure.

Astronomical Ring for Access to Spectroscopy ( ARAS )
ARAS is an informal group of volunteers who aim to promote cooperation between professional and amateur astronomers in the field of spectroscopy. The purpose of ARAS in fostering the participation of amateur astronomers in scientific projects in the field of spectroscopy is not to implement and coordinate observing campaigns. This is the role of astronomy research scientists, laboratories or international consortiums. ARAS will however attempt to consolidate the acquired data into a web database and will ensure that the quality of its data is compatible with scientific processing methods. ARAS was held from 6 to 11 May 2003 by the 8th "Ecole d'Astrophysique d'Oléron, France" and organized by Jean-Pierre Rozelot ("Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur", France), under the aegis of the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique" (CNRS). Astronomical Software & Documentation Service ( ASDS )
The Astronomical Software and Documentation Service (ASDS) is a network service that allows you to find existing astronomical resources for solving your problem. ASDS started life as the Astronomical Software and Documentation Service, devoted entirely to astronomical software packages and their associated on-line documentation. Much code is rewritten these days, not because anyone has found a fundamentally better way to solve the problem, but because they simply don't know who has already done it, whether the code runs on the system they have available, or where to get it if it does. That is the problem that ASDS was intended to solve. The objectives of ASDS changed in 1998 when its scope was expanded to include astronomical observing sites and their associated telescope and instrument manuals, taken from a listing maintained by Liz Bryson (bryson@cfht.hawaii.edu). The service was renamed at this point.

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts ( AAA )
The bibliography 'Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts' (AAA) aims to present a comprehensive documentation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their neighbouring fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world.
AAA are published since 1969. The older literature (from 1899 to 1968) is recorded in the forerunner of AAA, the bibliography 'Astronomischer Jahresbericht'.
AAA are a printed publication of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Heidelberg, produced in cooperation with the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe FIZ (since 1988) and the Institution of Electrical Engineers IEE (since 1995). AAA are prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union.
An on-line version of AAA in the 'reference format', i.e. without the summaries of the papers, is available in the data base ARIBIB of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut.

The Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is a NASA-funded project whose main resource is an Abstract Service, which includes four sets of abstracts: (1) astronomy and astrophysics, containing over 500,000 abstracts; (2) instrumentation; (3) physics and geophysics; and (4) Los Alamos preprint server. Each dataset can be searched by author, object name (astronomy only), title, or abstract text words. Atacama Large Millimeter Array - ESO Web site ( ALMA )
The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is the new name for the merger of the major millimeter array projects into one global project: the European Large Southern Array (LSA), the U.S. Millimeter Array (MMA), and possibly the Japanese Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (LMSA). This will be the largest ground-based astronomy project of the next decade after VLT/VLTI, and, together with the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), one of the two major new facilities for world astronomy coming into operation by the end of the next decade.

The Narrabri site contains the Australia Telescope Compact Array, which consists of five antennas located along a 3-km railtrack, and a 6th antenna 3 km further to the west.

ATNF Parkes 21cm Multibeam Survey
The Parkes 64-m telescope is commencing an HI Southern Sky and Zone of Avoidance survey in 1996. The survey will cover redshifts up to 0.04, and be sensitive to objects with HI mass between 10^6 and 10^10 solar masses, depending on distance. This will be the first extensive "blind" survey of the 21cm extragalactic sky.

Atomic Line List
The atomic line list is a compilation of approximately 855,000 allowed, intercombination and forbidden atomic transitions with wavelengths in the range from 0.5 Å to 1000 µm. Its primary intention is to allow the identification of observed atomic absorption or emission features. The list is nearly complete for all ionization stages of all elements up to zinc. Transition probabilities are available for nearly 14% of the lines; they are mostly derived from Opacity Project data.

The APS Catalog of the POSS I contains millions of entries for stars and galaxies, and the corresponding Image Database contains their pixels and more. The data behind the Object Catalog and Image Database are generated from digitized Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates. Object Catalog entries include calibrated magnitudes in two colors, positions to 0.2 arcseconds, confidence measures on neural network image classifications, colors, and various other useful parameters.
AVHRR Land Pathfinder Data Set ( AVHRR )
The Pathfinder AVHRR Land data sets are global, multichannel, land surface data derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) on the NOAA/TIROS operational meteorological satellites (NOAA-7, -9, and -11) which provide a continuous daily and composite data set from July 1981 through the present. These data, when complete, will enable studies of global vegetation and surface characteristics over more than a decade. Every effort has been made to provide a consistently processed data record by cross-calibrating instruments and minimizing changes to the processing algorithm during the processing of the 1981 to present data.
