Interactive raytracing for optical design or education

Raytrace allows you to set up and trace rays through
arbitrarily complex optical systems. Rays may be one of three
colours (wavelengths). Both real and idealised optical elements are supported.
A scripting facility allows student tasks or demos or complex
design tasks to be set up and played at the
click of the mouse button. Ray diagrams can be animated
by dragging with the mouse or under script control and
ray paths are updated automatically as you drag. Protractor and
tape measure tools allow accurate measurements which update automatically as
diagrams are dragged or modified.

Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey
( SUMSS )
-
SUMSS is a deep radio survey of the entire sky
south of declination -30 degrees, made using the Molonglo Observatory
Synthesis Telescope, operating at 843MHz and recording right-circular polarization.
SUMSS matches (approximately) the resolution and depth of the NRAO-VLA
Sky Survey (NVSS). The principal data products are mosaics which
cover a 4x4 degree square on the sky. The centres
of the mosaics mirror the NVSS centres in the north.
The resolution is 45" x 45"/sin(dec), and the rms noise
limit varies from 1.3 to 2mJy/beam (lower toward the south
celestial pole).
The survey began in March 1997 and
will take eight years to complete. SUMSS is suported by
funding from the Australian Research Council.
The primary reference
for a description of the survey is: Bock, D.,
Large, M. and Sadler, E.

Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope
( MOST )
-
The MOST consists of two cylindrical paraboloids, 778m x 12m,
separated by 15m and aligned East-West. A line feed system
of 7744 circular dipoles collects the signal and feeds 176
preamplifiers and 88 IF amplifiers. The telescope is steered by
mechanical rotation of the cylindrical paraboloids about their long axis,
and by phasing the feed elements along the arms. The
resulting `alt-alt' system can follow a field for +/- 6
hours (necessary for a complete synthesis with an East-West array)
only if the field is south of declination -30 degrees.
For fields near this limit the signal-to-noise ratio is considerably
lower for the first and last hour or so due
to the lower gain of the system at large `meridian
distance' angles.

status to create user-generated maps of the selected features, as
well as a text listing. A dynamic ISMAP is created

any feature viewed on the map, or directly from the

of their selected features by using hierarchical cluster analysis to
generate a dendrogram of any groupings.

Microvariability and Oscillations of STars
( MOST )
-
MOST is Canada's first space science microsatellite and its first
optical space telescope project, aiming for launch in late 2001.
MOST is designed to measure (as its acronym implies) Microvariability
& Oscillations of STars in broadband light with a precision
of a few micromagnitudes over timescales from minutes to days.
The resulting eigenfrequency data will be used primarily for stellar
seismology, to probe the structure and ages of Sun-like stars,
magnetic stars, Wolf-Rayet stars and halo subdwarfs. The subdwarfs are
expected to yield age estimates which would place a meaningful
lower limit on the age of the Universe. MOST should
also be capable of confirming the presence of giant extrasolar
planets identified in Doppler surveys.

The Canadian Space Geodesy Forum (CANSPACE) is a computer-communications-based information

as an aid to improving communication among scientists and engineers
working with the techniques of space geodesy. Among topics discussed
are the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS), Glonass, Transit, very
long baseline interferometry, satellite laser ranging, satellite altimetry, etc. Daily
postings of information bulletins include GPS satellite constellation status reports
(Department of Defense Notice Advisories to Navstar Users) and reports
of solar and geomagnetic field activity. Information concerning satellite launches
and orbital elements is posted regularly. Although initially intended to
link Canadian geodesists and geophysicists together, CANSPACE now has a
wide international subscriber list and is open to all. Questions
are particularly encouraged.

than 100,000 stars in some 500 open clusters. Various facilities
are offered to perform selections on star clusters and access
the available data for each cluster. The database query through
cluster maps is a main feature of the interface. A
place where anybody should be able to get the desired
data and contribute his or her own observations.

Nanjing Astronomical Instruments Research Centre
( NAIRC )
-
Nanjing Astronomical Intruments Research Centre (NAIRC), China, was founded by
Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1958 for developing mainly the
large and medium astronomical instruments and also other instruments by
integrated optical, mechanical, electronical and computer techniques. There are about
520 staff members working in NAIRC, including one China Academician,
17 senior researchers and professors, 60 senior engineers and 150
technicians. They compose a technical team to study and design
the overall astronomical instruments including optical system, precise mechanics, automatic
and computer controls. NAIRC is equipped with precise mechanical machines, electronic
testing instruments, large and medium optical fabricating machines, of which
some are very rare in China. NAIRC is specialized in
optical process technology for aspheric surface, birefringent crystal, etc. Its
off axis aspheric technique is in the domestic lead position.
The technology of antenna panel for millimetre wavelength radio telescope
is also being advanced in China. NAIRC adopts astronomical technique
and methods research as its subject direction. Its main developing
areas are the instruments for stellar, solar and satellite observations, astrometric and
radio astronomical instruments and other instruments by comprehensive techniques. The great
achievements have been obtained in basic research field such as
the active optics and astronomical optical interferometry, which have been
placed as the major research projects of Chinese Academy of
Sciences. Especially, after finishing the pre-research in NAIRC, the Large Sky
Area Multi-objects Fibre Spectroscopy Telescope (LAMOST) has been rated as
one of the major national scientific projects.
NAIRC is
an authorized unit for training M.Sc and Ph.D students with
the subject of "Astronomical Instruments and Methods". NAIRC is having
wide international contacts with more than 20 countries. The multilevel
academic exchange and technical-trade collaboration have been set up with
overseas scientists, institutes and specialized corporations.

AstroMB: Computer Aided Astronomy
( MBCAA )
-
The AstroMB software package provides a PC-based database, image viewer
and planetarium to handle astronomical images and catalogs. Astronomical objects
on images can be identified from catalogs. Observations at different
energy range (e.g. X-ray and visible light) or at different
times may be matched together. Astrometry and photometry can be
performed automatically, with pattern recognition. The database holds the descriptions
of many catalogs, such as radio sources, X-ray objets, minor
planets, etc. It also holds the descriptions of more than
10,000 images, mainly from the ROSAT and Einstein Observatory satellites,
and can be enriched with the user own data. The
program is ASCOM compliant and can drive a telescope.

Astronomical Ring for Access to Spectroscopy
( ARAS )
-
ARAS is an informal group of volunteers who aim to
promote cooperation between professional and amateur astronomers in the field
of spectroscopy. The purpose of ARAS in fostering the participation
of amateur astronomers in scientific projects in the field of
spectroscopy is not to implement and coordinate observing campaigns. This
is the role of astronomy research scientists, laboratories or international
consortiums. ARAS will however attempt to consolidate the acquired data
into a web database and will ensure that the quality
of its data is compatible with scientific processing methods. ARAS
was held from 6 to 11 May 2003 by the
8th "Ecole d'Astrophysique d'Oléron, France" and organized by Jean-Pierre Rozelot
("Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur", France), under the aegis of
the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique" (CNRS). This session
essentially focused on the theme "Astrophysics Tools for Cooperation between
Amateur and Professional Astronomers", with special emphasis on spectrography. It
demonstrated that amateurs can make a useful contribution to observation
in a broad range of fields. [also in French, Italian,
