Beyond The Peak: A More Complete View of Molecular Gas In Nearby Galaxies

February 24

12:10PM, Room 230, NRAO, Edgemont Road

Abstract:

I will present early results from the Herschel Beyond The Peak: a spectral mapping survey of ionized, neutral and molecular gas, with a focus on CO excitation. 22 SINGS galaxies have been partially mapped (21 Nuclear Regions; 2 Extran Nuclear) with the Herschel SPIRE FTS. providing spatially resolved line emission from [NII], [CI] and 12CO from J(4-3) to J(13-12). I will discuss the largest spatially resolved census of the ISM in as many galaxies, as well as ancillary data: ground 12CO J(1-0),(2-1),(3-2); Herschel KINGFISH SPIRE photometry and PACs spectroscopy; and optical IFU mapping of ionized gas. With this ancillary data we explore trends in excitation variations of molecular gas. The parameter space explored within resolved galaxies will provide key insights and diagnostics for understanding high redshift galaxies where ALMAs view of 12CO is severely limited.
