--------------------------------ALG telecon------------------------------ ALG 25 Feb 2002 Ishiguro, Hasegawa, Chikada, Kawabe, Kurz, Brown, Wootten The ASTE antenna has arrived in SPdA and is being erected at Pozo Tres. The Japanese prototype antenna is still on schedule for VLA delivery April 2003. * ATF schedule from Jeff Mangum to be sent to Ishiguro by Brown * preparation of equipment for testing needs NRAO help; drawing etc. expected on holography receiver, nutator, receiver, etc. * Testing is to be done under a 3-way framework, what are details of the work breakdown schedule for this? JP responsibilities need to be worked in. Test dewars; contract is placed and the prototype is under production for display during the ASAC meeting. Changes requested by Cunningham not implemented in design for various reasons. As this is mostly for testing in lab rather than on an antenna, MI feels that cooling time is more important than axis orientation. Photonic cal: photodiode measured two weeks ago in Tucson. measured output power of photodiode integrated into log periodic antenna with hyperhemispheric lens over range 100 GHz to 1.2 THz using an FTS. The polarization properties change with frequency owing to use of the log periodic antenna (+/- 25% typical) so measured in two polarizations. Calibrated with blackbody radiator. Data is under evaluation, about 1 microwatt at 400 GHz seems about right, some signal may have been seen to 800 GHz, where coupling between photodiode and fibre was only 1%, which can be improved. The tests were considered generally successful, working on data, tests, and coupling. Also tested waveguide photomixer at 100 GHz, measured output from oversized waveguide at 350 and 800 GHz. Strong signal at 350 GHz with a carrier peak 40 db above the noise floor. Only 5db at 800 GHz. This is taken as a good indication that this will work. This work continues with the NTT and NAOJ photonics people. [Later, John Payne said that during testing all three NTT photodiodes had been blown out.] Photonics telecon was held 19 Feb, Shillue, Payne, Sekimoto, Gusten, Ishiguro and others present. ALMA Week face-to-face discussions are needed. Followup from face to face promised at RAL has not been achieved and must be as action item before ALMA Week. The direct photonic decision deadline is before the LO CDR in June. RB: Payne wrote a document listing steps needed for 100 GHz. First was 100 GHz phase stability measurement, still an issue. Has there been any progress with this? MI: we have preliminary measurement with NTT and found no significant difference from the Gunn diode results. U2T photodiode compared to NTT in Tucson, found noise problem perhaps traceable to laser stability rather than diode. This is being investigated; Shillue to visit JP in May to pursue this. RB: The Gunn multiplier phase noise is discussed in an ALMA Memo, we need a parallel effort for the photodiode. MI: Also there is a good prospect for a special JP budget under IT Proposed to build a very stable master laser/comb generator at a University next to Mitaka. Is this duplication of effort or useful? RB: We do need a good maseter laser even in the basic plan. Proposal in Japan: MI sent a copy of a letter in email. In it, Kaifu addresses three points to Cesarsky and Eisenstein's attention: funding, antenna and ACC. 1) JP funding. MEXT is organizing a subcommittee under to review the total JP construction funding for FY2004. NAOJ will try to move this earlier. The JP economy remains unfavorable, but the best effort will be made. Committee members are scientists, MEXT is inviting people who are economists and in international relations to strengthen its recommendations. MEXT will transfer the report to the Finance Ministry for response before the next request for funding. Council of Science and Technology already reviewd the science; this review will focus on the JP contribution, compared to ITER and the International Space Station. Final report before July, as the request for funding is transmitted in August. ASAC: Agenda set. Hasegawa reported it to be a two day meeting 19&20 March, with science day on 21 March at a museum. At the latter, there will be lectures from Fukui, Cox and Blake on the charm of ALMA science. MI asked to see the WBS of the two way project, the draft agreement (EU and NA needed to be renewed 31 Dec01). The latter is an ACC matter to be discussed on the 19 March telecon of the ACC. --------------------------------end telecon------------------------------
