31 Mar 2004 SOC telecon. Kevin, Min, Yancy, Chris, Doug, Al, Chris W., Lee Al: ACTION to ask if anasac could get Ops Plan for comment. KYL agrees. Al will distribute. Facilitator action items: ACTION: Kevin--could call Dave Wilner. Doug to call Shawn Dougherty. Done, cannot come. Bieging? ACTION: Facilitators need to be given instructions. WOOTTEN Send to facilitators and to speaker. Instruments session. ACTION: CC to send invites as below. ANASAC face to face meeting. ACTION: Min sends an agenda send anasac along with info on money. ACTION: Fred about money for meeting, Ops Plan to anasac. KYL agrees. Discussion of agenda General agreement that it would be good to have an anasac meeting in the afternoon. Fred: Input wants input on how to identify the NAASC Head. Function of anasac as advocacy group. Doug: I would like to establish this topic Chris: We ought to be able to self-identify some topics. Perhaps topic X. From ASAC discussion, the Ops Plan may be useful for us to discuss. Min: What is formal relation with ASAC. Chris: Potential in areas where typical ALMA users are involved. It is appropriate for ANASAC to look at things where a broad swath of opinions are most appropriate. People on ASAC are quite specialized, anasac is broader and more representative of the broader user community. Al: ACTION to ask if anasac could get Ops Plan for comment. Doug: I feel we should be playing this role; others are playing them. Lee: The ASAC isn't as proactive as the IPTs. Doug: We should be more involved. Min: I don't know too much about what has been said in the past. How do we get the non RA members involved. Chris: Discuss session III. Have facilitators been notified that they will be expected to lead the discussion. This is a two hour discussion. We need to have room for folks just showing up who would like to present something. Perhaps 30 minutes worth of preset session talks. Mundy: Discuss a few projects from the DRSP in more detail and present science case and how it might be improved. More than people discussing their favorite stuff. Doug: Yes, we want to stack the room with people who will lead the discussion into certain topics. Yancy will take infall and star formation. Min: Yes, we need to identify areas which can be improved. Mundy: You could focus on what would be the best early science legacy project. Something which would provide a splash. Chris C: Does this satisfy your earlier concern about whether people could present research to justify funding. Min: Yes. Mundy: If giving a presentation I can get my grant to cover costs. Min: Also sets up discussion for followup. Doug: We need a lot of people who will jump in. Four things for breakout groups. Are there things we have missed? What is good for early? What is OK for legacy? Min: Many legacy projects are for mature telescopes. Muncy: But we do need something splashy. Doug: We want people to feel they have had their ideas put in. Chris W: If thre is something we know ten teams will propose we will want to do that as some sort of master project. Min: Al will talk about early science and capabilities of that? Al: Yes. Chris W: Do we also need someone to lead off a discussion of early science legacy? Who is registered? We can get a list. Of order of ten people are registered. Min: Fill up open slots for facilitators. Bieging to go along with her? Chris C: Do we limit to anasac members? Chris W: Ask Bieging if he can come. Doug: What about Shawn Dougherty? Chris W: I'm not sure--maybe he could not come. No he might be able to come for stars. Doug or Chris will ask him to be a facilitator. Chris W. Gurwell could help facilitate. Weinberg or someone at DTM. Seager? Alicia is closer to obs of dust. Charlie Qi might be good. Wilner could talk about this. Ask if they would like to be a facilitator or speaker in the session, then let them loose. ACTION: Kevin--could call Dave Wilner. ACTION: Facilitators need to be given instructions. WOOTTEN Send to facilitators and to speaker. Session IV. Min: I thought we needed more exciting results. Early science leads to the thought of what the other instruments might be. Mundy: Some of these stray from the main subject, Chris W.: We should include Spitzer, Hershcel or SOFIA but JWST gets farther afield. Mundy: 30 mins per topic is way too much. Min: I was thinking more of an information session. Chris C: If we were to do it we would need talks on Evla, GBT, SKA, Chris W: Or we group and have one person cover it all. Mundy: Political nightmare. Chris W: There is a whole multiday meeting in Germany about this. Mundy: ten minutes per obsy, what kinds of science complement ALMA. Plan on netting six or so. Doug: Can we combine with talk on mm interferometer, then poster with numbers. Yancy: Could extend poster session with a few minutes of discussion. Doug: Yes, what we will do with these antennas over the next N yers. Min: I worry about posters. I'd find it easier to have 3 viewgraphs than a poster. Mundy: Someone covers all these things, maybe mention European stuff. Soon it grows, and one must present with a straight face whatever one was told. Min: Informality welcome. Doug: I like hving the info come out and ask questions. Mundy: Just send out invites Doug: ten minutes each, then group the people who bite. Also hope that people will bring a poster. Mundy: Leave out SKA. Chris C: I wouldnot put SKA in. Doug: You might add Herschel. Mundy: ARO. Min: Who sends out invites. General acclamation for Carilli. Invite people. Tie their observatory to ALMA. CSO Phillips ARO Ziurys LMT Min EVLA Perley GBT Brian Mason? Arecibo? Brown SOFIA: Becklin, Sandell? Spitzer: Werner Herschel: Phillips, Paul Harvey. Ted Bergin. Doug: Send me a copy of the letter and I'll send it to the top guy. CARMA: Anneila. SMA: Moran Doug: Do we need 1.5 hrs for lunch? Mundy: Lunch is a buffet so we should be able to finish in one hour. Session 3 then starts 130 pm. One viewgraph presentation of posters? Maybe better to highlight posters during the working groups--ones relevant to session. Get facilitators to do this. Who gives group summaries. Facilitators give summaries on Saturday. Who could mention poster results. Who should chair session six? Send in announcement for electronic alert. One para weblink, snappy title. Actually goes out around 11th. Send it to Kevin cc crystal@aas.org for ELA ACTION: Min sends an agenda send anasac along with info on money.
