October 2002: Plan for compact and intermediate configurations finalized A plan for the compact and intermediate configurations will be presented to the JAO for approval. This plan will include positions and uncertainties for the planned pad locations for ALMA suitable for investigation by those planning construction of the ALMA infrastructure. Based upon this configuration, the large Y+ configuration will be planned and positions provided suitable for investigation by those planning construction of the ALMA infrastructure. Owing to the more dispersed character of the largest configuration, some iteration based on actual investigation of sites chosen by remote designers will be needed. February 2003: Review of calibration requirements with science examples complete This review covers the calibration specifications for ALMA to achieve the science goals set for it by the community. Specific science goals will be used to illustrate the specifications. June 2003: Review of specifications for calibration items complete: WVR, FTS, weather station This review takes the specifications written in February and translates them into requirements on how these specifications might be achieved. A detailed description of instruments needed, including such auxiliary devices as the WVR, the amplitude calibration system (dual-load, semi-transparent vane, or other), any required bandpass or polarization calibration devices (a photonic transmitter in the subreflector, e.g.), a Fourier Transform Spectrometer, atmospheric temperature or other sounding devices and weather station requirements will be included. June 2003: Plan for Y+ configuration finalized A plan for the largest configuration will be presented to the JAO for approval, with the iteration between chosen sites and practical locations complete. September 2003: Calibration strategy finalized The Calibration strategy is the baseline plan for the calibration of ALMA. It will take the specifications and requirements already developed and confront them with the instrumental expectations to form the blueprint for calibration of ALMA observations. December 2003?: Science aspects of operations plan complete, including core functions of Regional Support Centers The goals for science operations of ALMA, constituted by the ASAC with approval of the ALMA Board, are developed into the actual plan. June 2004: Plan for early science configurations complete During Early Science, there will be minimal population of the planned configurations. The Science IPT will develop a plan for the placement of the Early Science antennas and for their movement between pads. September 2004: Selection of WVR strategy With tests of the latest generation of WVRs in hand, the Science IPT will develop a strategy which, in harmony with the calibration strategy, may be used. This strategy will be developed through the use of the simulation software, along with advanced atmospheric modelling. December 2004: Review of tests of calibration strategies on prototype interferometer complete The prototype interferometer should begin operations during the early Fall of 2004. The various aspects of calibration which may be employed on the prototype interferometer will be reviewed, including but not limited to amplitude and phase calibration schemes. June 2005: Science verification plan for tests and commissioning individual components at the ALMA site will be written. A plan for end-to-end science verification on a selected set of astronomical sources will also be written. These plans will be finalized by this date. These plans will draw upon experiences and results from the prototype interferometer tests. June 2007: Science verification of ALMA early science array with Bands 3 and x complete *** assumes Band 3 and at least one other Band commissioned*** Execution of the plan established two years prior (above) will be finished. xxxx 2008: Science verification of ALMA Bands y and z complete *** verification of any bands not included in early science array *** Execution of the plan established prior (above) will be finished with a complete suite of frequency bands. xxxx 2009: Science verification of ALMA imaging quality complete *** need ALMA with at least 32 antenna's *** Execution of the plan established prior (above) will be finished with the half-complete array.
