Education and Public Outreach

I participate in a variety of education and public outreach (EPO) endeavors which, one might say, I am passionate about. Strictly speaking, the efforts that we as scientists make to educate the public justifies our use of ".edu" in our email addresses. In the following I go into some detail on a few of these EPO projects that I am involved in. The links to the left represent a more complete list of my EPO activities.

In May of 2015 I was asked to talk about my Ask an Astronomer blog by Jess Goulart on her "Biology of the Blog" program at Breakthru Radio. You can listen to this podcast, which is kind of interesting (with great music!).

The NRAO Summer Student Program

I was involved in the NRAO Summer Student Research Assistantship Program for most of my career at NRAO. In addition to mentoring well over 15 students, I have coordinated the program from 2004 until 2014. Since its inception in 1959, the NRAO Summer Student Research Assistantship Program has engaged over 1,000 young people in scientific research. Many of our summer students have gone on to distinguished careers in astronomy, physics, and other sciences. The list of former NRAO summer students includes women and men who represent a wide range of careers, research interests, geographic locations, and ethnic backgrounds.
