NRAO System Admin Meeting: CV Overview

All-in-one version

Computer Room:
- Polaris (login server) and Sirius (file server)
- Kochab (ftp/majordomo/aips) - replace with new web server
- Eagle - NT server
- Many (mostly Linux) dedicated servers
The AIPS and "Single Dish" Caiges:
- Vulcan and Valen: Intel/Linux workhorses
- Hominid: Alpha/Tru64 workhorse (older)
- Lemur: Solaris, tape server of sorts
- Tektronix Phaser color printer
- Mandrill (Alpha Linux, poor orphan)
- Gibbon: Solaris, web server, replace with Linux web/ftp server
- Astral: HP, US-Navy system (grant)
Ivy Road:
- Nucleus (Sparc Server, their "polaris")
- Quetzal: HP, dedicated system
Other Public Systems: Library (1 Ultra, 2 NT PC's), VideoConf (1 NT, soon to be dual boot), Vangogh (Sparc), Siamang (Alpha), Purgatory (Sparc)
Desktops: Linux (21+), NT (lots), Solaris (13-)
Printers:
- ps1: HP LJ5: big, duplex, first floor
- ps1tek560: Color, transparencies (money pit), AIPS Caige
- ps2: HP LJ5: big, duplex, second floor
- ps3: HP LJ5000: big, duplex, third floor (library)
- ps3tiny: (on loan to GB) light duty printer, third floor (library)
- psir1plot: widebed color poster printer, Ivy Road
- irhplj5k: HP LJ 5000, Ivy Road
- irtek760: Tek 760 Color printer, Ivy Road

Solaris systems:
- "Dataless" clients mostly; /usr served from sirius
- Central /opt/local/ also from sirius (= /usr/local on most systems)
- Common /opt/local/share/ with other architectures
- Currently almost all Solaris 2.6 (one 2.7 system); going to 2.8 soon.
Linux systems:
- All mostly standalone; kickstart being deployed for upgrades, etc.
- Central /opt/local/ from sirius (= /usr/local on most systems)
- Common /opt/local/share/ with other architectures
- Mostly at Red Hat 6.2; a few 6.1 and 6.0 stragglers
- Dedicated boxes locked down tight.
AIPS:
- Home of AIPS is on kochab (moving to valen soon)
- Distributed via "midnight job" to 20+ primary sites (all 4 NRAO sites, plus many external); and at least 12 secondary sites (feeding from primary). Technology: ssh.
- Public machines (AIPS Caige etc.) offer 100-200 GB user space and 15+ tape drives of many flavors.
Web: (see separate discussion/talk)
- Home of www.nrao.edu, www.cv.nrao.edu, www.aui.edu.
- New server (Dell PowerEdge) delivered: 90GB hardware Raid-5 hot-swap disk, 256 MB memory, dual processor P-III 600. To be deployed in coming months, to support first two (AUI has its own machine).

Majordomo: server has 125 lists (counting digest variants); Easy to use Request Form allows more as needed
Documentation: The Gold Book intended to be Observatory-wide Resource
Directory: Phone book for now. Drives several behind-the-scene resources:
- Personal Page List (auto-generated nightly).
- Auto-Generated Mailing Lists, Observatory-wide and per-site.
- Phone Book Lookup (internal and external versions).
- XTACACS-based 1-800 number dialin authentication (user/password) for all NRAO accounts on CV terminal server (uses phone book, yp, aliases)

... all of which would be a lot easier, more robust, and far more extensible with a real LDAP-based directory!

Unified Unix UID/GID across the observatory
Single NRAO-wide NIS (or LDAP equivalent) databases: password, aliases, hosts, group, netgroup, etc.
New Web/FTP/Mailing-List Server (deploy, mirror at AOC/TUC? GB?)
WorkGroup Software, probably web based. BSCW didn't catch on...

CV Computing currently provides some Observatory-wide services
Historically, CV has been able to investigate and help deploy new technologies and resources
With adequate staffing levels, this can and should continue
