SPAM IS BAD

According to Eileen Harrington of the FTC, out of 283 pieces of spam received in FTC email in one week, only two were clearly not fraudulent. If you're a legitimate business, is THIS the company you want to keep?

Excerpts of Testimony of Barbara Dooley, Executive Director of CIX testifying before the House Telecommunications Subcommittee on June 23, 1998 on HR3888 - the House version of Senate Bill S 1618
CIX and the Internet Law and Policy Forum (ILPF), ..., undertook an international survey of ISPs ... to determine the severity of their UCE problems and examine the means ISPs use to protect their networks and defeat "spammers". Our preliminary findings show the following with regard to US ISPs: 94.0% reported that spam irritates their subscribers; 79.5% reported that UCE slows system performance; 75.9% stated that it increases operating costs; 33.7% said it creates system outages, while 22.9% reported other effects such as staff costs and a tarnished image. When questioned about the frequency of the impact, 58.5% reported daily or more frequent impact; 28% said weekly, 8.5% said monthly, 3.7% said infrequent, and only 1.2% said never. Regarding growth of the problem, 27.7% of US ISPs reported 100% or more growth; 15.7% reported growth between 50 - 99%, 27.7 reported 10 - 49%, 9.6% reported the same amount of UCE, and only 2.4% reported a fall in UCE. Fully 27.9% of US ISPs reported that they are losing revenue as a result of UCE.

Here are excerpts from my procmail filter log. All were sent to /dev/null and most were bounced back to the sender. Those bounces that were undeliverable were made to be deliverable (via whois/traceroute/etc) before they bounced to my postmaster (me).

The actual log summary I generate daily also includes the reason for the filtering, and starting in December 1997 I'm leaving this in place.

I was particularly amused by the one that wanted me to turn my washing machine into a cash cow... I did have a washing machine I wanted to get rid of, but I ended up giving it away. Moo (with apologies to Hillary...)

Look, spammers: it's pointless to try to send me this stuff. I DON'T READ IT! And I certainly won't buy into whatever it is you're pushing. You're wasting your time, you got ripped off by whoever sold you that CDrom with zillions of "guaranteed" email addresses, and you'll go broke if you keep trying this nonsense. Not only that, but the tiny percentage (0.00001%?) of people who do read them are getting educated and TOSsing the stuff too. Get a CLUE!

Grand total from April 14, 1997 to March 1, 1998: 1,409,170 bytes. This is not counting the mailbombing that some spammers (or perhaps the ko0k cabal; but I repeat myself) aimed at me (and my S.O.; they are totally clueless) just before this period.

Any forged spam that leaks through my filters (this is quite unlikely :-) will be reported to fraud@ftc.gov. Any other spam that leaks will be treated much as my Spamfighting Cabal Colleagues (TINC)[1] handle them, usually with a large wooden mallet. I don't keep count of the spammers I've had "nuked", but we're probably talking triple digits here...
