FITSview FITSview is a viewer for astronomical images in the FITS (Flexible Image Transport System). It runs under MS Windows and allows the user to select and display images. Celestial positions (including WCS, DSS and IRAF) and brightnesses of pixels in the image may be obtained. Other features include zoom and scroll, modyfing the color table, marking positions of interest, printing the image and writing the image as a bitmap file (.BMP). Either regular FITS images or gzip (*.gz) compressed images may be viewed. Installation: ------------ FITSview is distributed as a self expanding archive containing the installation files: FV32v??.exe for Windows95/98/NT FV16v??.exe for Windows 3.x (last release is 2.0.1) where ?? is the version number, e.g. "202" = version 2.0.2. To install, first execute the appropriate file. You will be prompted for the name of a temporary directory (folder) in which to store installation files. It is recommended that you create a temporary directory for this purpose to simplify the removal of the installation files. The setup files will fit on a single floppy disk. If you have WinZip on your system you have the option of using it to do the installation; specify the "Run WinZip" button on the dialog box from FV??v??.EXE and then select "Install" in WinZip. Once the installation files are unpacked, run the SETUP.EXE to install FITSview. If there are problems with the Windows 3.x setup, refer to the file install.txt. A demonstration pair of FITS images, NGC1316R.FIT and NGC1316O.FIT, is distributed with FITSview. These images are in radio and optical light of the same region of the sky and are suitable for blinking. There is also a description of these files in NGC1316.DOC. Uninstallation: -------------- Windows95/98/NT: Use the Add/Remove Programs feature of the Control Panel. Windows 3.x: Delete the files in the installation directory (default C:\FITSVIEW). These are FITSVIEW.EXE, FITSVIEW.HLP, README.TXT, README.WRI, NGC1316R.FIZ, NGC1316O.FIZ, and NGC1316R.DOC. Then remove any FITSview icons or groups from the Program manager. In case of problems: ------------------- If the self extracting archive that you download fails to expand itself, first check that your browser or ftp software has not done an "ascii conversion" on the binary file. The easiest way to check this is by comparing the size of the file. As of version 2.0 this is 1,081,717 bytes for FV32v202.exe and 410,113 for FV16v201.exe. If your file is substantially larger (thousands of bytes) then it has been corrupted. Try coaxing your browser into making a binary transfer or use ftp and specify binary mode. If the self extracting archive still fails then you can try either FV32v202.zip (Windows95/98/NT) or FV16v201 (Windows 3.x). Use PKZIP or WinZip to uncompress and then run the setup.exe to install. If all else fails, the executable and help files for FITSview are in directories win32 (Windows95/98/NT) and win16 (Windows 3.x). FITSview.exe can be executed without additional installation.
