README.1ST ANTARCTIC METEORITE LOCATION AND MAPPING PROJECT (AMLAMP) ************************** The Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) and AMLAMP have documented the location of thousands of meteorites from Antarctica since 1979. The location data now is available for general use. This file describes the structure and content of the various AMLAMP map, explanatory text, and database files available over the computer network. If you have and questions please feel free to ask, though it may be hard to get an answer in a timely manner. We would also appreciate any comments or suggestions as well as notice of any errors that might be found. AMLAMP databases and maps are updated, if needed, once a year, usually in the Spring. The files in the directory have been updated as of August 1993. Many classification changes are in the offing so the meteorite listings will be outdated upon issue of the March Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter. The AMLAMP uses an arbitrary "icefield" code which has been assigned to each map area/icefield for which there are meteorite location maps. The following icefield codes are currently in use to name the various files from the different areas: 1. Allan Hills Main Icefield 2. Allan Hills Near Western Icefield 3. Allan Hills Middle Western Icefield 4. Allan Hills Far Western Icefield 6. Elephant Moraine-Elephant Moraine Icefield 8. Elephant Moraine-Texas Bowl Icefield 10. Elephant Moraine-Northern Ice Patch 13. Peckling Peak- Reckling Moraine Icefield 15. Lewis Cliff Area and Ice Tongue 18. Queen Alexandra Range-Goodwin Nunatak Area 20. Pecora Escarpment 25. Patuxent Range - Main Icefield Area 26. Patuxent Range - Brazitis Nunatak Icefield 30. Wisconsin Range-Upper Reedy Glacier Area 35. Thiel Mountains-Moulton Escarpment Icefield The files for each area are placed in separate sub-directories using the convention AMLAMPn to name the subdirectory, where n is the icefield code. A listing of the contents is given below. The explantory texts are extracted from the upcoming LPI Technical Report which is in press and expected to be available by October or November. The size of the file in bytes, in parentheses, follows the file name . ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE MAIN AMLAMP DIRECTORY FILES README.1ST - This file README.2ND - Draft of the introductory portions of upcoming LPI Technical Report SHOWGL19.ZIP - Compressed files of a HPGL veiwing program. This data can be easily ported to dBASE or other database formats or spreadsheets because the files are fixed field or space delimited. The format of an AMLAMP database file is: Column Decscription ------ ------------ 1-20 Name 21 space 22-23 Icefield code 24 space 25-54 Classification 55 space 56-61 Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter reference 62 space 63-72 Meteorite weight in grams 73 space 74-83 Reserved for future AMLAMP use 84 space 85-94** Meteorite/station UTM grid northing (meters) 95 space 96-105** Meteorite/station UTM grid easting (meters) 106 space 107-112 Grid cell address 113 space 114-125 Meteorite/station latitude(ddmmss.ssss) 126 space 127-139 Meteorite/station longitude(dddmmss.ssss) 140 space 141-152 Meteorite/station name latitude(ddmmss.ssss) 153 space 154-166 Meteorite/station name longitude(dddmmss.ssss) 167 space 168-179 Meteorite/station tie-point latitude(ddmmss.ssss) 180 space 181-193 Meteorite/station tie-point longitude(dddmmss.ssss) ** - UTM grid coordinates are only available for the Allan Hills Icefields, Elephant Moraine Icefields, and Reckling Moraine Icefield. *.HPGL FILES These files are the plot files and are are in Hewlett- Packard Graphics Language format. If you have an E size HP or compatible plotter you can plot these files directly or there are some software packages that allow you to plot the files out to a HP Laser Jet printer. A file viewing program is available in the main directory which you can use to view the maps on your PC's monitor (Sorry Apple users). This is program called SHOWHPGL and is in SHOWHPGL.ZIP with other support and instruction files. You will need a copy of PKUNZIP to unzip the ZIP file. The *.HPGL files can also be converted, using graphics conversion software, to other file formats that can be used in other software programs such as drafting programs for example.
