3C31 = B0104+321

• FR I (plumed) radio galaxy at z = 0.017 (70 Mpc, H = 71 km/s/Mpc, Ω_m = 0.27, Ω_Λ = 0.73)
• Linear scale 340 pc/arcsec
• Rapidly expanding, then recollimating, jet and counterjet
• Northern jet base is brightest just before jet boundary "flares"
• Fainter, narrow inner jet close to central source
• Evidence for rapid slowdown of bulk relativistic outflow
• VLA λ3.6cm (8 GHz) data at 0.3 arcsec resolution
