Weather ======= You can get weather stations from Costco, but I purchased a relatively high-end Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 through Amazon. It is mounted on a pole with the wind detectors about 15ft high. The main unit is solar-powered with a backup battery. It transmits the data via a dedicated radio link to the house. It comes with a monitor, so if that's all I wanted, that would be all. However, I wanted to make the data useful, so I purchased a computer interface and a cute micro-computer. This captures the data and uploads it to two on-line services. The PWS started reporting to NOAA through the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) on 06/06/2019. The graphical display of NOAA's NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) MADIS (Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System) is available online. The basic map covers the entire globe; you can roam and zoom the map to anywhere. Click on any station to get the most recent weather readings. The environment of my station (FW5485) is: https://madis-data.ncep.noaa.gov/MadisSurface/?CenterLAT=37.7&CenterLON=-78.4&Zoom=9.00 It is flattering that apparently, since mid-June, NOAA seems to have been distributing my PWS data to its modelers. You will note that it is in an area with few other sampling stations. To review recent weather, or to take a closer look at our property (using zoom) go to the location page at: http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=FW5485 [The default weather radar map is confusing because the ground clutter echos have not been completely removed.] There are many more people who report PWS data to Weather Underground (WU), where my station (KVASCOTT14) is at: https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KVASCOTT14 WU's Wundermap displays a sample of their contributing sites. The equivalent to the NOAA display above is: https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap?lat=37.7&lon=-78.4&zoom=9 So the data is publicly available. I can probably offer a custom feed; I have offered such to a local TV station, but I believe they get the data from WU. I could (maybe will) upload the data to the equivalent services in the UK and Germany for their weather modelers. Gareth Hunt, 18 September 2019
