Based on N-body simulations and kinematical evidence
the phenomenon of box- and peanut-shaped (b/p) bulges
in galaxies is now usually explained by resonances or
instabilities caused by bars.
New results on a detailed statistical study addressing
the frequency of such box/peanut bulges and a small NIR
imaging survey will be presented. These new results
are discussed with regard to the origin of b/p bulges.
In particular it is shown that some large and boxy bulges
might be caused by merging.
