4.5 Mixed Video and Phone Conferencing

The built-in facility for patching a phone line directly into the Polycom ViewStation presently gives poorer audio quality than the direct approach:

  1. use the Polycom phone conferencing unit to provide audio from dial-in participants to a nearby Polycom video conferencing microphone, and

  2. use the TV monitor audio to provide sound from the video conferencing participants to the dial-in participants via the microphone in the phone conferencing unit.

The essential rule for mixed video and phone conferencing is: DO NOT CONNECT ANY PAIR OF CONFERENCE SITES BOTH BY PHONE AND BY VIDEO CONFERENCING SIMULTANEOUSLY (this creates an audio feedback loop between those sites).
