My name is Antonio Hales. I am a Scientist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), and Deputy Manager of the North American ALMA Regional Center of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, (ALMA). I work in astrophysics, education and outreach, and in the art-science interplay through music, sound, and literature.

My research in astrophysics focuses on the question of the origins of planets. My latest papers include evolution of gas and dust throughout the formation of planetary systems, from early protostars to newly formed planets. My work employs observing facilities, such as ALMA, in conjuction with theoretical models such as hydrodynamic and radiative transfer simulations.

In the interplay between art-science, outreach and education, I have led and participated in projects aimed at promoting a more astronomically literate society. I am the lead scientist in the multi-disciplinary team that conforms the ALMA Sounds project. I am the manager of the Research Experience for Undergraturates (REU) program in Chile. The program is an initiative designed to broaden participation of under-served and underrepresented populations in the field of astronomy.

I am the author of the children's book ¿Estamos solos en el universo?, a book that tackles the fundamental question of life in the universe amid the light of the latest advancements in astrophysics. The book is written in a language that attracts children as well as curious adults. I also acted as Scientific Editor for the stunning book 'Unknown Landscapes of the Solar System' by awarded Catalunyan illustrator Aina Bestard (Zahori Books).

I graduated with my doctorate (PhD) at University College London (UK) in 2007, where I studied the environments of dusty young stars, advised by Professor Mike Barlow. After a two-year postdoc at NRAO, I moved back to Chile to participate in the commissioning of ALMA. For 15 years I was part of the permananent ALMA scientific staff at the Department of Scientific Operations. IN 2023 I moved back to NRAO Headquarters in Virgnia, USA, as Deputy Manager of the North American ALMA Regional Center at the North American ALMA Science Center (NAASC) .

Antonio Hales es doctor en Astrofísica por la Universidad de Londres y Licenciado en Ciencias por la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Chile. Se desempeña como científico del Observatorio Nacional de Radioastronomía (NRAO, EEUU) y como sub-gerente del Centro ALMA Nortemaericano (ALMA) en Chile. Tiene una vasta experiencia en observaciones de radiointerferometría, técnicas de calibración e imagen, que aplica al campo de la formación de estrellas y planetas. Sus trabajos recientes tienen como objetivo caracterizar la evolución del gas y el polvo en los discos formadores de planetas, desde la etapa protoestelar temprana hasta las etapas del disco protoplanetario y de escombros.

Antonio tiene, además, varios años de experiencia en actividades de educación y divulgación pública, a través de los cuales ha buscado fomentar el descubrimiento de la astronomía en las nuevas generaciones. Un ejemplo de ello es el proyecto ALMA Sounds, que une a productores de música electrónica y científicos para crear música con las señales que provienen del espacio. El proyecto ha llegado a una audiencia de miles de aficionados a la astronomía. En 2017, Antonio recibió el premio AVONNI a la Innovación del Gobierno de Chile por su trabajo pionero en el Proyecto de Sonidos ALMA.

Antonio es autor del libro ¿Estamos solos en el Universo?, el cual aborda la pregunta de si estamos o no solos en el universo a la luz de los ultimos avances en astrofísica. El libro está escrito en un lenguage atractivo tanto para niños y niñas como para adultos curiosos.

Antonio es el creador y director del Programa de Prácticas de Investigación Científica en ALMA, una iniciativa orientada ayudar a estudiantes de grupos subrepresentados a realizar trabajos de investigación en el área de astrofísica.
