Linux for Astronomy

Where is it installed?

• On all CV Linux user systems: valen, orangutan, auidom, power, charybdis, sngldsh, redbud, chloe, fits, merger, saturn, spica. Served via the /opt/local tree from sirius.
• /astro: symlink to the /opt/local/astro directory.

• /astro/bin should be in your path but only on Linux systems (~pmurphy/.profile.path already takes care of this). Contains:
  • The IRAF "cl" startup script (for use after you do mkiraf);
  • XFITSview binary;
  • saoimage binary;
  • xgterm and ximtool from IRAF;
  • Various system utilities (that we already have for the most part: perl, awk).

• /home/astro: start scripts for all packages, e.g. start.iraf, etc. (this is also resident in the /opt/local tree).

• /home/astro/install has instructions both for installing the packages (me) and the initial user setup (you).
