How do I use them?

If in text mode, <ALT-F1> (hold the <ALT> key down while simultaneously pressing the <F1> key) to get to console 1, <ALT-F2> for console 2, etc.
If in X11, <CTRL-ALT-F1> for console 1, etc (hold both <CTRL> and <ALT> keys down while pressing <F1>). Also works in text mode.
Beware the GPM driver! (mouse in text mode) Do not move the mouse while in text mode with an X session still in another console (GPM disabled on some systems).
It may take a few seconds for the monitor to stabilize; avoid rapid-fire switching between consoles.
